Bought a second hand kids bed

Bluepolkadots42 · 18/08/2020 13:11

Hi I feel really stupid even writing this but today I bought a second hand kids bed- it's one that usually retails for around £150 in Ikea. Right now DH and I are pretty broke (and have been since DD was born due to DH's work circumstances) and the bed and mattress were advertised as 'rarely used' for £90 (apparently seller's toddler still co-sleeps and refuses to go in this bed). If we had paid full price for both in shop then it would have been £230 and that isn't a price we could afford.
I've cleaned all of the frame down thoroughly with anti bac spray and have done the mattress zip off covers in a 60 degree wash, however I cannot shake the feeling that I've made a huge mistake and there will be bed bugs or something in it which will bite DD and infest the entire house.
After we got home from collecting it I came up in a tiny patch of hives on my forearm- this has happened before on my legs and arm when our cat has rubbed her nose/mouth against me- I always assumed I had a mild allergy to her. The house we got this from had a dog however seller assured me it never goes upstairs into bedrooms and I can't see any evidence of pet fur on the frame or mattress. I now basically just feel really icked out and itchy and have it in my head there's something dodgy about the bed.
Am I being unreasonable and overthinking this or have I made a massive mistake?
Just so as not to drip feed I do suffer from a diagnosed anxiety disorder and I am aware this could be influencing my thoughts/feelings right now.

I buy everything second hand - furniture, clothes, toys etc. Give them a good clean as you have. Never had a problem. Most people don't have the luxury of spending even £150 on a bed so you are lucky. If you'd bought it for a tenner from a scruffer then maybe. But sounds like it was a well looked from a good home.

Marmite27 · 18/08/2020 13:17

If it’s the kura I wish you were near me, I couldn’t give the frame away last month Sad

It’ll be fine if it’s clean and washed.

DDiva · 18/08/2020 13:18

Personally I wouldnt have a second hand mattress, but bed fine. Could you stretch to getting a new mattress?

fitzbilly · 18/08/2020 13:19

You're over reacting.

You've made a very sensible purchase, good for your finances and good for the environment.

The bed sounds clean and in good condition. Try not to worry about bed bugs, you would see them, they are visible to the eye.

Thanks @fabulous40s the woman I bought it from was really lovely and was very nicely put together and her daughter was very sweet too, looked clean and tidy etc. I think the little hives I came up in (which could potentially be unrelated) is what has triggered me into worrying about the purchase. It could even be a reaction to a cleaning agent she had already wiped the bed down with.
Just to say we didn't spend £150 on it- we paid £90 for both the bed and mattress. £150 is how much bedframe is new and mattress would be £85- which is way too much money for us!

Nothing wrong with a second hand mattress if the cover is removable and washable and it's hardly used. In hotels you use mattresses others have used.

StrangerWager · 18/08/2020 13:23

I bought a Mothercare toddler bed and mattress and they were selling for the same reason (co sleeping)

It was immaculate and the mattress still looks new.

Saying that DD co slept in my bed a lot Hmm so I suppose its hardly been used at our house either!!

We got rid of the bed frame as DD got too big, but kept the mattress for when IF we buy a small camper van Grin

Bluepolkadots42 · 18/08/2020 13:24

Thanks @fitzbilly- you're right it was the best decision for our finances. I've had a thing about bedbugs since my travelling days... clearly still not over it!

@DDiva this is what I worried about... at the moment we will use DD's old mattress (although it doesn't fit the frame properly as it's way too small) To get the proper mattress for the bed is another £85 which we will struggle to pay for for another 3 months or so.

@Marmite27 it's the Sundvik extendable bed. We did look at the Kura too and liked it but think we will wait to get one until DC#2 needs the toddler bed. Hope you find someone to buy it from you!

Perfectly responsible purchase. The money you didn't spend will be better put to another use by you and your family.

Bluepolkadots42 · 18/08/2020 13:26

@fitzbilly I hadn't thought about it like that. You're right- we've used tons of 'second hand' mattresses in our lifetime on holiday/at friends houses etc and lived to tell tale. I know with newborns and young babies they say don't use second hand mattresses, but our next one will use DDs cot mattress as it's in good condition...
Hotel scenario is making me feel much better about whole thing. The mattress covers have no markings on them at all.

I've lost count of how many kids beds we've bought and sold second-hand, kids grow so quickly from toddler bed to bunks etc, it makes sense. We have kept our own mattresses though. Perhaps get a professional steam clean?

Bluepolkadots42 · 18/08/2020 13:27

Thanks @StrawberrySquash- it will be- on food and petrol!

We just got back from a holiday in a well used chalet and a very comfy night in a premier inn. I bet the beds we have been in this week are much more "well used" than the one you have bought. Do you go on holiday or stay in hotels?

If the bed and mattress look very clean I'm sure it will be fine. If you can't get past it then buy just a mattress.

We have had our single bed mattresses for over a decade. They were guest beds then our kids beds. They are immaculate because they have always been covered in a waterproof sheet when used by kids and a genetal matress protector. You can feel the springs now though so I probably do need to think about replacing!

Northernsoullover · 18/08/2020 13:28

I bought a second hand bed out of hardship for me to use. I must admit to having a wobble over bedbugs too but since I did my pest control module at university I knew to check in the seams. You'd likely see them. I now check any hotel beds too Blush

avocuddl · 18/08/2020 13:29

Could you get hold of a steam cleaner to put your mind at ease? That would deffo kill anything. With a mattress protector too I really wouldn't worry

MakeItRain · 18/08/2020 13:31

I can understand your worry but it sounds like it came from a nice family and was hardly used, like she said. I've bought a second hand bed before and we still have and love it. Just give it as good a clean as you can and leave it to air for a while with the windows open. Sounds like you got a great bargain Smile

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 13:31

Can you give it a good vacuum both sides before putting the cover back on? I have no doubt though that your gives are anxiety or a reaction to something else

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 18/08/2020 13:33

It's fine, it's just your anxiety. Congratulations on getting such a bargain! Grin

Bluepolkadots42 · 18/08/2020 13:43

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at rest! My DH is back in the office this week and not having another adult around to shoot my anxious thoughts at is taking its toll! MNers to the rescue Smile

gnushoes · 18/08/2020 13:57

You said you won't use the mattress until your DD is slightly bigger - if you can wrap it in a huge poly bag and seal it you'll see if there's anything wandering about well before you use it. There is highly unlikely to be - think the MN Zoflora-and-hourly-showers lot are just getting inside your head! You're doing good stuff for your family, your finances and your planet.

Grapewrath · 18/08/2020 14:01

Check the seams for bugs and any untoward markings. Give the mattress a good hoover and if possible a steam and it’ll be fine

Gingerfish91 · 18/08/2020 14:06

If you’re anxious. Check the seams, give it a good hoover and steam it if you can. You can buy spray as well that kills bed bugs (apparently). Chances are though it’ll be absolutely fine xx

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/08/2020 14:33

It’s just your anxiety playing up. Nothing wrong with secondhand. It is good for the environment too to buy second hand.
