To force vitamin 'drops' on baby if she hates them?

Drops in "" as they come with a syringe and it's more like a teaspoon dose (so false advertising from Wellbaby) but yes, LO absolutely dreads them and she's only 7 months. She firmly presses her lips shut and pulls away and I feel bad persisting. Should I try disguise in her food (but dont want her to go off her food) or switch to vit d drops only? Or any other recommendations?

@dementedpixie it’s from birth now if breastfeeding

dementedpixie · 17/08/2020 21:04

You're right. If formula feeding its only required if taking less than 500mls

dementedpixie · 17/08/2020 21:06

Although its only vitamin D that's specified from birth and A,C and D from 6 months

BringMeThatHorizon · 17/08/2020 21:12

I use the NHS Healthy Start ones, it's only 5 drops a day so I just add it to his milk. He absolutely refused to take any other kind.

@AppleCinnamonSlice

Unless you have been advised by a paediatrician to give your baby vitamins then you really have no need to.
I'm wondering about that. I never gave them to mine, it wasn't even mentioned at check ups. He's nearly 41 now and has always been quite healthy.

However, if it is the 'done thing' nowadays it should be something that tastes decent and/or can be hidden in food if necessary.

We started offering her a chocolate button and giving her the vitamins followed immediately by the button.
We went from screaming and fighting to get her to take any medicine to her taking it happily within a week and stopped the buttons.

Reluctantcavedweller · 17/08/2020 21:56

We used Abidec. Just bunged it straight in first thing at breakfast and then a big spoonful of porridge.

LivingoffCoffee · 18/08/2020 07:11

@AppleCinnamonSlice My HV said to start giving them once he started dropping bottles

Starlightstarbright1 · 18/08/2020 07:30

If you are breastfeeding ,yes they are important.

Less so if bottle fed. As others have said try disguising it in food

DipSwimSwoosh · 18/08/2020 08:07

She shouldn't really need them. Especially if breast fed and getting plenty of fresh air.

Dino90 · 18/08/2020 08:13

You should be mixing them with food not giving them to her from a syringe bless her

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/08/2020 08:16

@Dino90

You can give it straight from the syringe, bless her- sounds very patronising.

Why is that? Recommendation is all children under 5 get vitamin supplements.

Abidec are definitely worth a go- my DD hates calpol and the like but claps when the Abidec comes out and grabs the dropper if I'm not quick enough dispensing it! The little drops when BF and at early weaning are hard to be confident they've definitely had them, I thought, so I made sure I supplemented myself and didn't worry about it too much until she started BF less- that's where the Abidec came in.

Wish I'd thought of that @FoxtrotSkarloey , would have saved months of trying to just drop them in to an open mouth and then plopping them in porridge which got chucked on the floor 😂

BingoGo · 18/08/2020 08:57

We use a spray instead. Our (nearly 1 Yr old) twins love it for some reason. But hate having their teeth brushed

Marmite27 · 18/08/2020 08:59

Have you tried them? They’re all disgusting. I’m not surprised she doesn’t like them! I found abidec the worst. They’re absolutely foul.

Orchidsindoors · 18/08/2020 08:59

I wouldnt want to give vitamin drops to a baby. They should be getting what they need from their diet.

Can't get enough vit D from your diet.

I breastfed for years, I've never even heard of giving extra vitamins until this thread. Has something changed in the diet of mothers that this is now considered needed for all?
SandieCheeks · 18/08/2020 09:12

@PleasantVille I imagine it's just better knowledge than diets changing (for example in the last couple of decades the importance of vit D and how many people are deficient has become more widely known). Vitamin supplements have been recommended for at least the last 10 years though.

My children are over 10, based on the current advice they are lucky to have not only survived to their teenage years but be healthy and fully nourished Grin

What I see here makes me wonder how new parents manage, they seem to be stressed by how restrictive everything is now.

"If you are breastfeeding ,yes they are important."
This is an interesting comment. So breastfeeding doesnt actually give babies everything they need?

Orchidsindoors · 18/08/2020 09:36

That's why you get them out and about in the sunshine?!
