To consider over an hour’s commute to work?

CherryBlossomMum · 17/08/2020 11:53

We’re desperate to move. Currently my commute is about an hour during term time (pre-COVID anyway), 25miles. I work 3 days a week, 8.30-16.00.
We’re very specific about what we want from our new house, and in our price range that means going a bit further afield. Found a nice reasonably priced place but it’s 37-44 miles commute to work (depending on the route) so probably over an hour’s drive. AIBU to consider moving there? Would you put up with such a commute?
My job is not a career, but I like my employer and colleagues, been there for 12 years now. I would look for something nearer, but I doubt there will be much going at the moment, people will be holding on to their jobs, I work in admin in education sector. WWYD?

Yes and I have done longer in the past. Your early finish means you will be home at a good time.

Darkestseasonofall · 17/08/2020 12:23

That's another 5 hours a week in the car, do you already feel like there aren't enough hours in the day?
My absolute maximum time I'd consider is 30 minutes, due to work life balance

Saz12 · 17/08/2020 12:25

I would, and have done in the past. However I’d not be happy about it!
Obviously you need to figure out the extra costs.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/08/2020 12:28

I used to do an hour and three quarters each way on the train and walking. It was definitely doable.

bravotango · 17/08/2020 12:28

Yes I would, you'll soon get used to it and relish the two hours of peace each day

Aroundtheroaringcandle · 17/08/2020 12:29

If you’re planning on sticking to 3 days a week, I’d do it. I commute just over an hour 3 days, and although it’s not exactly fun, it’s definitely doable because I know I have that 4 day stretch of no driving at the end of it. If you’re planning to go full time soon though I personally wouldn’t because you won’t have a chunk of no-drive days to look forward to. I think it makes all the difference myself.

Megan2018 · 17/08/2020 12:30

Depends on what the drive is like and how bad it gets on a bad day. Mine is 50-60 mins average. School hols it’s 35-40. It’s very rarely exceeded an hour unless bad accident etc.

My SILs commute should be an hour but regularly is 1.5hrs due to terrible traffic, that would be a No for me. It’s really a 1.5hr commute that occasionally takes an hour. That’s too far unless I had no choice.

JoJoSM2 · 17/08/2020 12:30

I couldn’t live with that carbon footprint... Isn’t there speedier public transport route?

DH’s commute takes 1h door-to-desk but most of it is sat down on a train catching up on emails and he much prefers it to his shorter but awful commute. Driving such a long distance sounds like a nightmare to me.

OldEvilOwl · 17/08/2020 12:31

I would go for it if its only 3 days, then if your finding it too much change jobs in the future to something nearer

Bibijayne · 17/08/2020 12:33

Have done it. Would only donut again for a lot more money and a job I really love.

CleanandJerk · 17/08/2020 12:35

I did this. For three days it might be doable.
I work 5 days and traffic volume increase in one area means it's now up to 1.5 hours. I'm finding it unsustainable.
Will it always be just over an hour, or could it creep up?

Megan2018 · 17/08/2020 12:36

@JoJoSM2b there doesn’t have to be a carbon footprint by car- I commute in an EV on electricity we generate ourselves!

Abraid2 · 17/08/2020 12:37

Where I live it's pretty well average for a commute.

Spindelina · 17/08/2020 12:46

I normally do about an hour on the train and 30 mins by bike each way, five days a week. I can get stuff done on the train or watch TV or sleep etc. The 20km/day I do by bike is my exercise. That's worth it for this job which was a big promotion, but I hope not to do it forever.

I'm currently doing three days of about 70 mins by car, plus two WFH. It's manageable but I can't do anything much while I drive, and I'm spending more of the precious 2 hours between getting kids in bed and going to bed myself doing exercise.

Shabooma · 17/08/2020 12:49

I'd say that's an entirely average commute amongst my family and friends.

Shabooma · 17/08/2020 12:49

And I know this because we all happened to be chatting about it a couple of weeks ago!

Kazziek · 17/08/2020 12:55

I commute about 1hr 15mins each way, 5 days a week. Most people in my office do that or more. At least you would only be doing it 3 days a week!

LemonTT · 17/08/2020 12:56

If you can’t afford the house you need within a reasonable commuting distance what choice do you have. It’s always going to be a long commute.

Sounds more like a consequence than a compromise of a decision you have made to move.

ivfdreaming · 17/08/2020 12:57

No I wouldn't. An hour maximum door to door is my commuting limit when working in an office. In fact when I had a baby If I could I would have preferred to at least half that

Crunchymum · 17/08/2020 12:59

3 days per week, I'd consider it.

Preseli · 17/08/2020 13:00

My commute is exactly that - 38/43 miles about 1hr 20/30 each way 3 days a week. (I work 8-5 though). Have to say I had a bit of a wobble about 3 months in where I thought I couldn't cope with it anymore but managed to get through that and am very happy now that I'm used to it - more time singing in the car for me!

As you already commute I'm sure you'll be fine, especially if you like where you work :)

Oly4 · 17/08/2020 13:02

Yes I’d do it three days a week for my perfect house
