Apologies, I know it's not really an AIbu but things can be rather slow and inactive on the home and garden bit.

What's the most useful or wonderful housewarming present you've received?

The recipient's home always looks like an interiors magazine spread or showhouse. Has two grown up kids and a few pets. Decent sized garden.

A hurricane lamp ( candle) with a box of matches. We live in a rural area prone to power cuts.It has come in useful on many occasions.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 16/08/2020 21:35

Small bottle of champagne. Pretty candle. Orchid. Potted lavender trees for the garden.

icedaisy · 16/08/2020 21:39

A shoebox filled with the things you don't know you need until you need. Picture hangers, a light bulb, needle and thread, masking tape, tape measure. Etc etc.

My gran made one for me and I still have it.

MatildaTheCat · 16/08/2020 21:41

Bottle of wine and a card. People with immaculate homes don’t want homey gifts other than possibly a very tasteful candle.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/08/2020 21:42

Fabulous hamper of amazing food.

thesoundofthepolice · 16/08/2020 21:42

Money or vouchers for somewhere you know they shop. It's a little bit impersonal, however, it's someone who is really fussy with the items I have in my house is would definitely be my preference.

CorianderLord · 16/08/2020 21:42

No the gag gift wine bottles.

Some expensive big wine glasses, a decanter or a houseplant are always winners (unless they don't drink).

Bluntness100 · 16/08/2020 21:48

What’s your budget?

Do they have things like a fire pit?

Tunnocks34 · 16/08/2020 21:58

A deep clean off a cleaning company!

We had to completely re decorate our house, and my parents paid a company to scribe and clean it top to bottom (even included putting on fresh bedsheets) the day the decorating was completed.

DinoGreen · 16/08/2020 22:07

The best house warming gift i was bought was a Le Crueset wine cooler sleeve, it’s brilliant. You keep it in the freezer and then if you have guests unexpectedly it chills a bottle of wine in 10 minutes (or keeps an already chilled bottle cool for a LONG time. I’ve used it loads - definitely the most useful gift we received!

Nacreous · 16/08/2020 22:10

Best house warming gift was a drill but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for here...

dwiz8 · 16/08/2020 22:12

When we moved in here one of my aunts got us this gorgeous vase, it's a pale pearl almost see through mosaic pattern and it fits wonderfully in the downstairs loo window

Reflects light and can hold small flowers

Failing that wine and chocolate never go unloved Grin

Thelnebriati · 16/08/2020 22:16

A bay tree, not a sculpted one just a normal one for the herb bed.

SunbathingDragon · 16/08/2020 22:18

A toolkit.

FizzyPink · 16/08/2020 22:18

@DinoGreen I need this!! So sick of keeping the open wine in the fridge and running inside every time we need a top up. Is this the one you have? www.philipmorrisdirect.co.uk/le-creuset-wine-cooler-sleeve/?sku=923028&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpu_949Kg6wIVD7TVCh1bngTcEAkYASABEgJhqvD_BwE

MulticolourMophead · 16/08/2020 22:19

I was once given a fire blanket for the kitchen. Still think that was a good one.

RhodaDendron · 16/08/2020 22:22

A bath mat or wine!

EasilyDelighted · 16/08/2020 22:25

A hammer drill.

Blue09 · 16/08/2020 22:36

A really nice hand wash like molton brown or Aesop. Aesop bottles are always on show in interior magazines.

@Turnedouttoes yes that’s the one!

PegasusReturns · 17/08/2020 07:28

Depending on budget:

Le creuset pot
Diptique candles
Long stem matches

angelfishrock · 17/08/2020 07:38

I would get a bottle of wine or a nice candle. Agree with PP that those with 'these' houses prefer to pick things themselves...

RemyHadley · 17/08/2020 07:43

I always give pot plants in nice pots. Preferably ones that can go inside or outside.

ABasilCocktail · 17/08/2020 07:43

I'm seconding the Aesop idea. Small and lux.
