So we live in France. We came to the UK last Wednesday to stay with my PIL for 10 days.
Two days later the UK imposes quarantine for all people arriving from France. We’re ok as we arrived before it.
However France is now threatening to retaliate, also imposing a 14 day quarantine.
I work as a teacher and am due back at work in 10 days, so obviously quarantine would be a major problem. My husband can work from home, so it isn’t a problem. My two daughters are starting Year 13 and Year 11 respectively and start back in two weeks.
My FIL believes that I am overreacting as my job wouldn’t sack me, so it doesn’t matter.
He is now blaming me that we have left today instead of next Sunday.
So AIBU in insisting we go back
or AINBU in going back today

You were taking a risk coming in the first place.

Aridane · 16/08/2020 18:21

Oh so weary with sanctimonious posters.

OP - I hope you enjoyed the time with your family and I’m sorry leaving early had soured it for PIL / you

FWIW - I would have stayed but my situation is different as I ‘enjoy’ (laughs bitterly) working from home

MadCatLady71 · 16/08/2020 18:28

I would have done exactly the same (and I live in France, too). It’s not a question of whether or not you would be sacked, it’s about being a responsible and conscientious employee and not wanting to let down your school or your students. I’m sure your FiL is just disappointed and would probably have done the same himself, faced with a similar situation back in the day.

rookiemere · 16/08/2020 18:30

YANBU I can understand their disappointment, but sensible to try to avoid quarantine when you have a job where you can't wfh.

Jokie · 16/08/2020 18:34

Definitely not unreasonable. Yes, definitely sad you needed to cut it short but you've done the right thing for your job.

Safe travels home :-)

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2020 18:37

YANBU, but neither are your PIL for being dissapointed

Jokie · 16/08/2020 18:38

Also, just checked... And you might already be screwed:

From the Disneyland Paris group:
....
"France have confirmed via their French Travel Minister that any people travelling from the UK to France will have to observe a 14 day quarantine. "

Going home a week early.

"France have confirmed via their French Travel Minister that any people travelling from the UK to France will have to observe a 14 day quarantine. "

It doesn't say that anywhere in that post. Have you posted the wrong image?

lanthanum · 16/08/2020 18:50

He's lucky you didn't leave your visit much later, as presumably it then wouldn't have happened at all. Perhaps just gush about how glad you are that you got a few days.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 16/08/2020 18:50

Having a professional attitude to your job, rather than working on the basis of doing the minimum so that you won't be sacked is not unreasonable!
Presumably you're also keen for your children to start school at the beginning of term?
Your FIL is being selfish and unreasonable.

RedCatBlueCat · 16/08/2020 18:55

I think I'd have left DH with his parents, and gone home with the kids. DH to self isolate in one room if quarantine is required when he returns.
But you didnt make a bad decision. I'm also not surprised PiL are disappointed, but they should give kept their opinions to themselves.
Safe travels.

Pandamumium · 16/08/2020 19:06

Thank you for your replies. We are now back in France and no need to quarantine.
Leaving my husband there was one option, but he decided to come back.
I know my FIL is sad, so am I. They are elderly and not too well and we had also hoped to do some jobs for them.
What is upsetting me is that I am being blamed for us going back, and that my FIL obviously doesn’t think my job is important.

Someone commented that the French gov have now reciprocated. Is this true?

I am losing my mind as am finishing a sale in south of France and have to go and remove everything from my house soon

tara66 · 16/08/2020 19:32

You were lucky your flight as not affected.

dwiz8 · 16/08/2020 19:33

Yanbu

It's ridiculous you're getting flack from your in laws about it. Your children will be starting school soon and being required to quarantine would have really disrupted them and you for work

tara66 · 16/08/2020 19:34

You can tell FIL that both Easyjet and BA have been cancelling and changing some flights to France and it will only get worse now.

Someone did post this, but the image that they have used to illustrate it says nothing of the sort. There has been no official announcement as far as I am aware.

Hope your sale goes smoothly.
