Dental pain

Therunecaster · 15/08/2020 21:53

About 3 weeks ago I developed a dental abcess in my lower wisdom tooth. My dentist saw me a couple of days later and after an x ray decided that the adjacent molar needed to be removed. Unfortunately they snapped the crown of my tooth out and I could have a surgical extraction of the roots until a week later.

The pain I have been in for the last two weeks has been horrific but no one seems to feel it needs more than a couple of paracetamol and ibuprofen. AIBU to think that dental pain is vastly under appreciated? Honestly childbirth was more bearable.

Yanbu, didnt they even deaden the nerve for you? Flowers

I feel for you Op.
I have had three children. The pain I endured was nothing compared to severe dental pain.
I don’t drink, but started gargling whisky to cope with the pain

I don't think so. A temporary filling was put on but it was still very painful. Nothing like the pain I've had from the surgical extraction tho. At one point on the night after I seriously thought about taking my Dads Oramorphine just to get some relief. Hands down the worse pain I've ever had.

I would have done the same but the antibiotic I'm on can make you have a bad reaction to alcohol.

I totally agree OP. I developed a molar abscess when we were on holiday (UK) a few years ago. The pain started at about 9.00 on a Sunday morning and by 13.00 I could barely see straight it hurt so much. No-one gave a shit until I rocked up in A&E and burst into tears and they took pity on me and gave me some tramadol which was amazing when it kicked in, but then wore off. Luckily a few hours later the fucker burst through the gum and I started to feel vaguely human (I was breastfeeding a 5 month old throughout this, which just added to the total misery). I can honestly say that I couldn’t have coped with that pain for much longer, I still shudder to think of it now.

Bless you and I've had abscess's before where I totally agree with you that they are literally more painful than child birth. Unfortunately the UK is the shittest country when it comes to dental. I would go to the A&E and cry until they give you stronger pain killers. You are in pain and it's not to be underestimated.

A / E were rude, dismissive and unhelpful as was 111 and the hospital dental surgeons. I was left to find a specialist dentist who could do the surgical extraction and to whom I will be forever grateful. No one else seemed to have any understanding or empathy with regards to the intensity of the pain.

Go to the pharmacy and tell them what’s happening, and ask for paracetamol and codeine. My husband had the same horrific pain and this was all that would help. Good luck, I understand how unbelievably painful this can be.

Gingerkittykat · 15/08/2020 22:43

I had an infected lower wisdom tooth out yesterday so sympathise, I was at the point where I would have happily ripped it out myself.

You can buy stronger than paracetamol from the pharmacy, I used a combo of ibuprofen and co-codamol which kept the pain in some kind of control. The pain last night was pretty bad even with painkillers but thankfully has calmed down a lot now.

Therunecaster · 15/08/2020 22:53

The pain is definitely more manageable tonight but still there. Thanks for all your advice and sympathy. I've been made to feel like it's just toothache and I'm making a fuss
