they do have good quality products that you cant buy elsewhere, though. For ages, they had irish directly squeezed apple juice, for reasonable prices. Also, they had v good quality frozen sausages (organic, I think), with only about 3 ingredients in.

Nightynight · 03/10/2007 18:22

Problem with the cheap prices is the Asda effect - you end up spending more because its cheaper.

StrawberryMartini · 03/10/2007 19:07

I'm never shopping in Asda again due to a recent non-delivery of groceries! (see thread way way down as it only got a few replies ). Anyhow they did compensate me with a £30 gift voucher so I guess I do have to go back (unless any of you want it... yours for £35).

I have trouble finding eco friendly stuff at ASDA, and all their offers are for crap food. Also, the baked beans are in the same aisle as the sweets, which leads to tantrums, so I don't go there very often or with the girls.

Tortington · 03/10/2007 20:09

asda - multi national take over the worldy conglomorate - stipping the poor of its resources so you can have a tea towel for 25p!

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 20:16

I shop at Asda and Tesco, much more cost effective and good choice! Always have, always will! Hate Waitrose, my mother seems to think it's more "upper class" why oh why does a supermarket choice have to be about class?? I don't even think classes exist anymore but if pushed I'd say I'm working class and proud of it! Have never food shopped in M&S but been with mum when she has and agree about the lack of choice!

bookwormtailmum · 03/10/2007 20:17

I don't regularly shop in Asda as we don't have one near me but I occasionally bought sandwiches in there if my regular sandwich cafe was closed . Very nice too but they're not exactly cheap for sandwiches .

mrsmerton · 03/10/2007 20:29

I'm an ASDA girl, the staff at mine are dead nice. Granted, if you shop at certain times of the day you are liable to get your purse nicked but all in all it's good for my family. Cheap, cheerful, and not TOO much choice, which I like!

ScottishMummy · 03/10/2007 20:33

i love a bargain i shop anywhereasda is ok no problemo for me

TheArmadillo · 03/10/2007 20:44

I agree that it's the sparkles on the thread not the Asda.

I shop at Asda - it's my local. ACtually it's the posh shop where I live (otherwise people shop at ICeland/farm foods/quicksave). Lidl's pretty posh round here too.

Locally I have a greengrocer (Which is great) but no butcher. Ok so there is one opposite Asda, but there are so many flies in the window you couldn't pay me to shop there. Otherwise the corner shop is a Tesco.

I hate Tesco, ours (both the corner one and the bigger one by my parents) never have any stock even first thing on saturday. Plus they are more expensive (which is a big thing when you are feeding 3 for £25 a week, plus nappies) and I prefer Asda food. Smart price stuff isn't bad adn they do things like a big bag of offcuts of bacon for around £1 that Tesco don't do. SO I end up spending more at Tesco cos they don't have the cheaper range that I need (IYSWIM).

PLus our local store is really friendly (though I don't think Crookshanks is particulalry fond of it )

TheArmadillo · 03/10/2007 20:45

oh adn I buy clothes there.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 03/10/2007 20:45

Lol at lidl being posh! If only..! Ours has endless shoplifters and broken panes of glass. Maybe it depends where you live!

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 21:07

Our Lidl is pretty posh I suppose. Don't go there often but occasionally it's really good.

Our local Tesco is really good with loads of choice and the staff are great but I have to fo on the bus to get there so if I buy too much it's impossible with a 3 yr old in tow.

Our budget is £30 pw for 3 (sometimes 4 if one of the older ones comes back for a bit) which includes nappies and a few treats like ice pops sometimes and Asda satisfies our budget and our shopping list!

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 21:07

I have to GO on the bus obviously!

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 03/10/2007 21:12

i shop at asda. I HATE tescos. I just find everyone so rude in there.

bozza · 03/10/2007 21:16

I think you are right and it is a bit of a faux pas, but I still do it.

TheArmadillo · 03/10/2007 21:19

CL - yeah I find asda great for shopping on a budget. We can afford a couple of treats on that as well.

Cos I remember the days when me and dp left home and were living together. We couldn't afford asda then and had to go down the market for tins without labels

WE've come on a long way since then I think the market is now a wilkinsons in any case.

So yes, asda round here (and lidl) are for the bit better off i.e. me and dp. PLus we have the benefit of knowing how to cook from scratch adn similar to save money.

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 21:23

Oh now Im feeling nostalgic!!! Tins without labels!!! Wasn't it fun waiting to find out what was in them??!!!

TheArmadillo · 03/10/2007 21:28

yes - could be anything from mushy peas to rice pudding.

MAde for some fun meals, lol

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 21:29

I had potatoes and peas at the ready one night and opened...............strawberry pie filling!!!!

And in answer to OP, no definitely not a faux pas!!

MorticiasMother · 03/10/2007 21:31

I shop at Asda and the Co-op just because they happen to be nearest. We do have a Tesco but dh and I tend to avoid that because we hate Tesco more than we hate Asda.

foofi · 03/10/2007 21:31

we don't have an ASDA anywhere near where we live - it's all Waitroses and M&S round here.

so if I'm ever in the vacinity of an ASDA I go crazy!

ScottishMummy · 03/10/2007 21:36

mumsnet faux pas is that like vol au vonts - thon wee posh poncey pasties

ChantillyLace · 03/10/2007 21:38

lol scottishmummy! does it make me posh to know about petits fours!??
