To ask if a college would take a student that could only be there a year

Dn is 18 and didn’t get the grades he needed for university. He’s not keen on remaining at his current school. He’s found a college but they only take up to age 19 would they still admit him if he could only be there a year?

The only person that can answer this, is the specific college admissions department, surely?

Good luck to him - it’s been such an awful year for his cohort 😕

It depends on what he wants to study and if he has go the grades to so the course.

He needs to contact the College really but yes it is possible to only study for a year.

thedaywewillremeber · 15/08/2020 17:44

He’s awaiting a reply I was just wondering if there was a general rule around it.

Thank you it’s a such a shame he didn’t get what he needed seems many other young people are unfortunately in a similar position.

If it's an FE college and he's signing up to do A levels or another full level 3 course, then he just needs to be under 19 when it starts, for funding purposes. It doesn't matter when he turns 19, so long as he's 18 on September 1st of that academic year.

thedaywewillremeber · 15/08/2020 18:00

He will be 18 still by the first of September. This colleges age limit is 19 maximum though as it’s sixth form college rather than fe college.

Everything is so uncertain this year there's no point in guessing, wait for them to answer and get the information from the horse's mouth

MJMG2015 · 15/08/2020 18:07

With all the news today, will he not appeal?

BubblyBarbara · 15/08/2020 18:10

He can’t go to sixth form college if he’s overage. It’s not like a proper college. You don’t get mature students at sixth form Grin

thedaywewillremeber · 15/08/2020 18:15

The college take some up to 19 he’s still 18 so could go for a year

Yes. We take people for 2 year courses who are under 19 on the day they start. This can mean they are a few days short of 21 when they finish

Clive222 · 16/08/2020 10:18

State education in the uk is up to 14 years, so generally it is possible to spend 3 years in post 16. You do sometimes have to change provider as it can be impossible for the same provider to get funding for the same student to do the same course twice, if they are resitting. But generally, it can be worked out one way or another.

This is why I strongly recommend never holding a child back a year though, as they will miss the chance of retaking a sixth form year if it becomes necessary

Deardonkey · 16/08/2020 10:19

I was under the impression you could only do the third year of 6th form if you were doing retakes or don’t already have a level 3 qualification.

LittleBearPad · 16/08/2020 10:20

Is he certain they do the same syllabus?

Jeremyironsnothing · 16/08/2020 10:24

It's unlikely they will be doing the same syllabus or modules. Why not just take them later this year in his own time?

thedaywewillremeber · 16/08/2020 14:12

They are the same he said apart from one subject
