What is the best question you have come up with in a job interview as a candidate?

I have a really important interview on Monday! It's for my dream job so I desperately need to nail it.

I have been asked to prepare some "thoughtful questions" for my interviewers.

So far I have:
What does the career progression route look like in your company for this role?
What is your company culture and what sort of employee engagement activities are available?

And then I draw a complete blank. Total brain melt and no idea what else to ask?

So please tell me - what do you think is the best question you have ever asked whilst being interviewed!!

I always ask what the interviewers enjoy about their jobs - you get some very interesting answers, useful insights & it’s usually a well received question. Though I think you need to feel comfortable with the rapport you’ve built before asking!

I’ve interviewed a lot of candidates over the years. I can’t say what was the best question really, but something genuine and not already covered in the interview - otherwise no question is fine. I recently interview someone who we thought was ideal UNTIL the question and then she went and ruined the whole interview with ludicrous questions. Extremely frustrating.

Aah @paddingtonbearsmarmalade that's a fantastic idea thank you! I will definitely add that to my list!

Generally I try and ask something specific about the team strategy/priorities for the next year or similar (if not already covered).

Palavah · 15/08/2020 10:09

What would the team say it's like to work here?/what would the team say is most valued here?
What does success look like for the person in role - in 3,6,12 months (in case you've not already covered that - even if you've discussed responsibilities it can throw up interesting responses)
What was the biggest success and biggest mess-up/disappointment last year?

UseItUp · 15/08/2020 10:14

What would you expect the successful candidate to achieve in the first year?

What scope is there to develop the role?

Something that demonstrates understanding of the industry and current trends.

Also what Dollywilde says – what direction is the company heading in, what are their goals/strategy for the next few years?

Ask the interviewer why they like to work there.

An interview is a two way process, you're trying to impress them, but equally they should be trying to impress you otherwise why would you want to work there?

These are all massively helpful thank you!!!!

Ive had a few interviews recently.

I currently ask how covid has affected the business and working environment. Brexit also if relevant.

How is success measured/KPIs etc
