Why do so many people in England use mom/mommy when we're not in the US?!

Just gets my goat that this seems to be happening more and more. Its MUM or MUMMY!!!

OP posts:
MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 14/08/2020 19:52

Yeh midlander here and it’s mom here nothing to do with America

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/08/2020 19:54

My friend (from Birmingham) is “mom” to her children.

Inthebackoftheimpala · 14/08/2020 19:54

Good luck try to get the irish to stop with their wee Mammys. I have one and am one. My wee Mammy is used often locally.

QueSera · 14/08/2020 19:55

I've never in my life seen mom/mommy in the UK.

DeeTractor · 14/08/2020 19:58

Aw shut up OP.

SummerNamechangeHappened · 14/08/2020 20:00

I don't know anyone who does this.
Lots of mammas though.

HariboHippo · 14/08/2020 20:00

@Kazziek

I must make sure I tell my Brummie relatives that they're pissing you off, OP! Mom is standard in the Midlands.
This.
VestaTilley · 14/08/2020 20:01

Not in some parts of the UK it’s not- it’s Mom in Wolverhampton going back centuries.

Fatted · 14/08/2020 20:04

I don't even live in England OP!! It's not just a bloody site for English people!!

NiceGerbil · 14/08/2020 20:07

Apparently it's for English people from the south type areas,

And we need to adhere to USA language? Obviously.

lilo0 · 14/08/2020 20:08

I'm in the Midlands, I know more people who use mom than mum

cosmo30 · 14/08/2020 20:17

I'm a brummie. Mom is the norm here. I can't say mum it doesn't feel right to me

Ethelfleda · 14/08/2020 20:26

Brummie here (hey fellow Brummies!)

We say Mom. So tough.

PhilSwagielka · 14/08/2020 20:29

@Debinaround

Mammy is not racist ffs. I'm in the NE and we say mam and mammy. "Where's your mammy and daddy?" "Show mammy where you fell over" etc.

We say Santa too. Mind blown Grin

Just like in this song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Boat_Comes_In_(song)
Ethelfleda · 14/08/2020 20:29

And tbh, as long as people aren’t referring to their mothers as ‘cunt’ I couldn’t care less what other people say.

BlusteryShowers · 14/08/2020 20:29

I'm afraid people who find Mam or mammy racist are simply mistaken. They're looking at it in the wrong context. If we thought about it we could think of plenty of words that have different meanings and connotations depending on their context.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 14/08/2020 20:29

West Midlands is Mom. East Midlands is Mum.

pancakeloverrr · 14/08/2020 20:30

I have studied in America and I have two languages on my phone - English and American English (for when I text my friends in America).

Sometimes when I post here, the autocorrect for having 'two languages' just messes up spelling of the words (eg rumour vs. rumor).

I definitely don't say the word MOM, and I haven't meant to use MOM, my phone likes to use the word mom sometimes. It's not intentional.

Littleposh · 14/08/2020 20:31

My mom's American, am I allowed to call her that??

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 14/08/2020 20:37

My kids call me Mom because their dad is from the West Midlands and he is the one who they hear saying it most often (as in 'ask your mom'. However we live in the North East and so I call my mother Mam. She refers to me as Mam when talking to the kids - ask your mam - so there is a note of that in there too.

So, in summary, I am Moam.

Ethelfleda · 14/08/2020 20:40

DH is Irish and he refers to me as Mammy in front of DS. DS still says mommy though.

Ethelfleda · 14/08/2020 20:40

@Littleposh

My mom's American, am I allowed to call her that??
TBH, I’m not sure you’re even allowed on MN if you have American blood Wink
kungfupannda · 14/08/2020 20:41

Its MUM or MUMMY!!!

Um, north-easterner here. No, it's not. I said Mammy, then Mam. My Irish friend still says Mammy. You might need to get out more, OP.

Clevererthanyou · 14/08/2020 20:46

I go by “Steve” but to each their own.

Debinaround · 14/08/2020 20:50

@PhilSwagielka ahhhhh I have an ear worm now! Grin
