Any parents dreading the rain?

6 days of rain forecast where I am. On the 4 days I don't work, we've had an amazing routine of getting up, going to the park/outdoors, home, lunch, nap, then the same with dinner and bedtime added to the end. Lots of long walks, lots of beach trips as it's round the corner etc.

I don't know what we're going to do when the rain hits. Not much indoors and affordable round here. No soft play. No swimming. My son does so much better when we get out. Realistically, we can't be out for hours on end in the rain.

It's making me dread winter with a toddler this year.

Anyone else?

If its not absolutely pouring down we always do welly walks through the woods. Kids love a muddy puddle to run through. Take plenty of towels and straight in the bath when home to warm up.

Bumblingalong30s · 13/08/2020 20:54

Yes, me too. I know people always say you just need to put the right clothes on, but as well as a preschooler I also have a baby who needs feeding and can’t walk yet but wants to move about. It’s perfect when we can put a blanket down and the baby rolls about while her big brother plays. Can’t do that in torrential rain!

rosiejaune · 13/08/2020 20:54

It's probably not going to rain all day though, is it? The percentages just tell you how likely it is to rain during the hour before. And even if it does rain during that hour, it may not be a lot.

So you can still make the most of the less/non rainy parts. And it might be warm even if it's raining, so you might enjoy being out in it (with or without umbrellas).

But you could walk and feed the baby in a sling (with an umbrella) while your older one plays rainy/muddy games.

Umbrella, rain suit,wellies. Done.

I know what you mean but I actually found the heat worse than the rain; we just put on our coats and get on with it now in the rain (I was never that person in the past) whereas in the heat we just couldn’t go out for a big portion of the day.

Indecisivelurcher · 13/08/2020 20:58

Yes, we will be in holiday in a chalet in Pembrokeshire, with 5yo and 3yo who hates the rain!!!

orangesandstrawberries · 13/08/2020 20:59

You go way faster down a slide in the rain Smile

Kay1341 · 13/08/2020 21:01

I'm the opposite, I find rainy days so much easier! We'll wrap up in waterproofs and take toys from the sandbox to play and splash in puddles in the park, it keeps my DS busy for ages. But we have a dog so going out in the rain isn't optional, which might have made it easier for me to adjust my mindset.

namechangetheworld · 13/08/2020 21:07

I'm dreading it. Our days sound much the same as yours. DD5 is more than happy to go out in torrential rain, puddle jumping in her wellies and splashsuit. Toddling DD1 who insists on walking everywhere would just be screaming about rain in her face, falling face first into puddles and complaining that it's too wet to go on the swings Hmm

Smurf123 · 13/08/2020 21:08

Wet Wednesdays waterproofs or Lidl's are really good for wet days .. we just put waterproofs on and go out anyway.. Forest is good as theres a bit of shelter ds is 2.5

GameSetMatch · 13/08/2020 21:26

Lots of craft material, paint, glue, scissors, stampers etc. Put them on the table and let the children do what they want with it! I hate staying indoors but we can’t complain we have had lots of sunshine and dry days so far this year.

Gogogadgetarms · 13/08/2020 21:28

Took mine out in wellies and waterproofs today and we walked the streets looking for puddles in the rain.
This was the first afternoon of rain. Not sure I can do it for 6 days straight though.
Might take them shopping on one day (that’s allowed right?!).

Following in case anyone else has any good ideas that aren’t mega expensive.

Bumblingalong30s · 14/08/2020 02:48

@rosiejaune it’s true that I can walk with the baby in a sling; we do that lots. But I’ve never been able to feed her while in the sling. She breast feeds only, won’t take a bottle and I’m not one of these mums who can bf while walking!

Where I am it’s not just rain either in the winter, it’s hail storms and sea gales. An umbrella would be blown inside out in seconds.

Polnm · 14/08/2020 03:03

Where is it raining?
No rain in Yorkshire

1forAll74 · 14/08/2020 03:18

No.it's lovely walking in the rain, if it's not torrential, and you have the proper clothing. Children usually like the rain, snow and ice for short bursts in the day. If you live in the UK. You have to put up with whatever weather comes you way mostly. especially up North.

Kokeshi123 · 14/08/2020 03:28

I've met about two people in my entire life who can feed in a sling. And trying to manage it while trying to stop your umbrella turn inside out and control another child while rain drips down your neck sounds like utter hell. My baby would fall asleep if she was in the sling for any length of time. Then you are stuck there in damp dripping clothes with a baby glued to you. More utter hell.

Craft shit is utter hell too. Trashed dining room, hours of housework, on top of all the other housework you have to do as a result of feeding kids at home three times a day. The last time we did crafts at home on a rainy day, I basically spent the entire day cleaning up.

Sorry, I'm not being helpful. Just having a moan and letting the OP know that I totally get how she is feeling.

Yeahnahmum · 14/08/2020 03:41

Toddlers love rain and puddles and mud. Get him some wellies and get yourself a thick coat and umbrella. They dont need indoor soft play. WE need that 😂 but you will be ok :)

howlathebees · 14/08/2020 03:47

Get an umbrella and their wellies on and they’ll be fine!

FortunesFave · 14/08/2020 03:59

Does he have a rainsuit? Get one on him...get wellies for him and you too...and go out anyway. You won't melt. Mine used to love a walk in the rain....dressed properly it's great. Mine loved looking for good, deep puddles to play in and float things on. Going into the park was also fun...watching the little stream overflow etc.

Glittertwins · 14/08/2020 06:02

My favourite video of our DTs is from being in the park on a very cold and wet June day about 8 years ago. Wellies and wet gear on running up and down jumping in the puddles. Flying down the slides (and landing a good metre away onto bouncy rubber at the bottom), their giggles never fail to make me smile regardless of how much of a bad day I'm having. They had an absolute ball.
Take spare dry socks in a bag with you.

Wecandothis99 · 14/08/2020 06:29

I'm so happy the rain is here but I'm 7 months pregnant so needed it cooler. Also feel more pressure to go places when it's hot so just a little break and chill at home with messy play / baking etc will do me just fine

Ghoste · 14/08/2020 06:34

Agreed. Wth. But otherwise we're still in lock down here, so I've got no sympathy for your rainy freedom. Envy

Mintjulia · 14/08/2020 06:36

You all need wellies and colourful rain macs. Smile

Although in this weather, let your dcs get gloriously wet. Let them run around in the heaviest shower so they can feel it on their skin. You’ll have a giggle fest on your hands. Grin
