Still wiping down groceries?

Just wondered if anyone is still doing this? At the beginning we were told the virus can live on surfaces for X number of days, but as far as I’m aware, the powers that be never elaborated on whether it was a real risk of transmission.

I have elderly parents and am being extra cautious for their sakes. I was about to stop wiping a few weeks ago but then number started going again when I live. I know the risk is super small, but anyway, anyone else still consider this worth doing? Or was the science updated somewhere to say there’s no risk of transmission from groceries/parcels etc?

Far more likely NZ is from either a quarantined person or airline staff.

Balkin · 13/08/2020 11:24

There's a difference between that & the nasty comments about people being 'mad' or idiots/ridiculous!

Well I agree with that but I do personally think some people have taken it way over what is necessary almost into a sort of panicked frenzy (I'm not saying anyone on this particular thread but people I've seen on here in the past). And I don't think it's necessarily good to encourage that. So pointing out the facts like 'you do what you like with your shopping but just FYI, this is what the evidence suggests' is a good thing imo. If it stops just one person worrying irrationally then good.

SoupDragon · 13/08/2020 11:25

fill the sink with hot water then add a couple of teaspoons of thin bleach

Is that tiny amount of bleach in a sink full of water going to make the slightest bit of difference? Why bother with the bleach at all at that dilution?

Vivana · 13/08/2020 11:26

Nope never have and ever will. I just wash my hands and use sanitizer when at work.

BestOption · 13/08/2020 11:26

@HyacynthBucket

I do as that way I feel completely relaxed about everything in the home. I reasoned that if shopping and any delivery parcels etc. that come into the house are definitely safe, then we can be more relaxed at home about constant handwashing and wiping surfaces and handles, etc. The risk of transmission on things is something I don't know how to quantify. Lots of people saying its low risk, but is it more wishful thinking than actual knowledge? In the early days the scientists were saying transmission via contact was a significant factor in passing on the virus.
Exactly!!

Being able to relax completely in my home is important to me, knowing that what comes in it, is as free from Covid as I can possibly make it, is a very small chore for the benefit.

userxx · 13/08/2020 11:30

Nope. Never did.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 13/08/2020 11:31

No. Never have.

Stinkbug · 13/08/2020 11:31

We did until a few weeks ago when we got a massive Tesco delivery. Haven’t wiped anything since.

No, it's not enough bleach & probably not enough contact time either.

I use dishwashing liquid and wash things firms & rinse them -more like hand washing as I think it's better. Plus I ruin less clothing!! (Bleach splashes)

Fyzz · 13/08/2020 11:34

I'm extremely clinically vulnerable and DH is over 70. At the beginning he was quarantining everything that came into the house. Shopping deliveries were all wiped down.
Not bothering now apart from fresh fruit and vegetables. I have always washed things like grapes, tomatoes apples etc before eating to remove traces of pesticides and I find it more convenient to do it all as it's bought rather than in bits before eating.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/08/2020 11:34

Whilst I know someone will say "you do know this is a global pandemic!" (Not sure why global is added to that phrase), but I'm surprised people are still doing all of this.

Do people change their clothes every time they get home from being out and about?

userxx · 13/08/2020 11:36

I spray myself down with a bleach and dettol mix in the back garden.

ElizabethWoodviIIe · 13/08/2020 11:37

@namechangetheworld

Went to the shops every day during lockdown. Ate crisps on the way home from Tesco without using hand sanitiser.

This is revolting, pandemic nonwithstanding. Supermarkets are crawling with germs at the best of times.

Eating after going to the supermarket is 'revolting'? Clearly you've never experienced the joy of tearing off hunks of warm bread on your way home from the shop. And haven't you ever bought lunch while you're out and eaten it straight away? A cheeky bag of chips after you've been to other shops?

Really??
staserlite · 13/08/2020 11:37

No one was washing their shopping with bleach during the last flu season that I recall

Most of accept flu as a risk that is low to most of us and that can be easily mitigated against if the risk is higher. The treatment and effects of flu are well understood. We've also got a fair chance of realising we've got it before we become infectious and pass it on to our vulnerable loved ones.

If you're not burning your clothes and putting yourself in the oven on a low heat for half an hour I'm afraid you're not doing it right.

I am assuming all those poster who are unhelpfully calling people nutters don’t have people in their household who are extremely vulnerable. DH is both much more likely to catch Corona virus and become very ill from Covid 19. Yes we are still washing fruit and veg in water, wiping fridge and freezer stuff in diluted bleach and quarantining store cupboard stuff. DD1 is starting school soon so I’m wondering if it’s still worth while then.

Yep we do, I am.

I wouldn't call anyone a nutter but neither would I be bleaching/wiping/quarantining, and I'm high risk.

My consultant has said that the only thing anyone needs to do is wash their hands regularly and that all of the above isn't necessary.

I bloody love a snack straight after shopping (usually in the car on the way back so I don't have to share once I'm home!) but I always either wash my hands in the supermarket loos or use hand sanitizer first. I can't imagine eating anything without having clean hands first!

@PhilCornwall1 I didn’t notice your original post. Have you been calling people names too?

Nicknacky · 13/08/2020 11:42

userxx Please tell me you are joking?

housemdwaswrong · 13/08/2020 11:42

Has to be your choice. I'm immunosupressed and have never bothered, but I know perfectly healthy people who do so.

We both have reasons that we see as valid.

@TheTrollFairy That I find really strange. If you take the time to do this, then it suggests you are very cautious. But then go back to work, and instead of carrying on to minimise risk, they have the unavoidable risk of catching it at work, then in their eyes at least, increase the risk from groceries. Doesn't make sense.

Interesting to see how different people have reacted but OP, absolutely your choice. I think it's barmy so I'm guessing you think me not doing it is barmy too.

Do whatever makes you comfortable. Sod everyone else.

No I haven't been calling people names, I'm not 7.

But I do think it's odd behaviour.

Dogsgowoofwoof · 13/08/2020 11:44

Never did.
