AIBU to leave the window open?

I'm in a bit of a quandary.

Baby (8 months) is asleep in her nursery. The thermometer says it's 28° in there - I have a fan circulating and her bedroom door wide open.
I had her window open and the temp started to drop a little bit (went from 29° earlier to 27°) but has crept back up - but I'm now going to bed.

Her room is at the front of the house (as is mine, next to hers).
We live on one of the more main, well-lit roads running through a quiet new build estate. There is little crime here although a house a few doors down did get broken into a few nights ago - but they entered through an open living room window at the front of the house that they had forgotten to close when they went to bed.

AIBU to leave her window slightly open overnight to try and keep the temperature down?

YABU - keep it closed
YANBU - don't be a precious FTM and open the goddamn window

Definitely open, your baby is more likely to over heat than burgulars' getting a ladder and climbing up.

CyberNan · 12/08/2020 22:27

do you live in a two story house or bungalow...?

given that there are obviously people on the prowl and burgled your neighbours, I would be cautious. Maybe get a window restrictor so you can leave the window slightly open but it cant open wide...

that wont help you tonight though.. sorry..

Don’t be silly - open the window. A hot baby can get very unwell but imaginary burglars don’t do much harm.

xoxogossipgirl2020 · 12/08/2020 22:29

I would, but then I’ve left my downstairs windows all open this week too, I think I’m too trusting in that regard but I wouldn’t even hesitate about an upstairs window

MKCH · 12/08/2020 22:30

Sorry, yes, forgot to say - we are in a two-storey house so we're upstairs and there's no easy access to her bedroom window (no terrace, porch or similar)

@CyberNan I'm now trying to work out what I have to fashion a makeshift restrictor for tonight 😊

Hot air rises, would it be possible to open your loft hatch and open a window on a trickle vent ( slightly open in a double glazed window). This would create an upward air flow drawing in the cooler air throughout the house.

Do you have an old style wire coat hanger and pliers?
YesINameChangeEveryDay · 12/08/2020 22:39

Definitely open the window right up. Also stick a big tub of ice in front of the fan.
I'm assuming the baby is just sleeping in a nappy too?

MKCH · 12/08/2020 22:42

@LouiseTrees I've just checked and sadly no - must have chucked them all when we moved

@YesINameChangeEveryDay yep just in a nappy. Good call for the ice - will go and get that now thank you!

If you want to leave the window open have her in with you.

ClaudiaWankleman · 12/08/2020 22:44

Any cable ties hanging around? Or garden twine?
Even a requisitioned old phone charger would have some good strength in it.

YesINameChangeEveryDay · 12/08/2020 22:45

We're leaving some smaller windows open tonight and we're in a bungalow. Our dog has a very loud bark and would recognise a strangers footsteps and give them a very noisy welcome. Little would they know that's literally all he would do as he'd really just want a pat.

BruceAndNosh · 12/08/2020 22:47

Put stuff on the windowsill that would get knocked over if someone tried to climb in!

orangejuicer · 12/08/2020 22:47

Do you have a travel cot or something she could sleep in in another room? DS is downstairs with DP and I'm baking up here!

DD would be chilly in just a nappy. It’s 27 here and she’s in a vest and 1 tog sleeping bag.

Definitely open the window OP!

Megan2018 · 12/08/2020 22:51

All upstairs windows open overnight here! DD 11 months but sleeps in my room. But it’d be the same if she was in her own.

I wouldn’t leave a window wide open with a mobile toddler or older child for safety reasons, but mine can’t get out the cot and I’m not worried about burglars.
