To ask what the emoji's mean on MN?

Bbq1 · 12/08/2020 20:40

I've been on MN a while now but don't really understand the meaning of the emoj's that people use. Mainly the yellow flower, bouquet of flowers, the bottle and the chocolate although there are others too. What do they signify and are they mostly meant to be sarcastic? Genuine question.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 12/08/2020 20:42

There's a list at the bottom of the page if you're on desktop. Not sure where it is on the app.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 20:43

The ones you mention are not sarcastic. Only really Biscuit that is not used to mean an actual biscuit

QuestionableMouse · 12/08/2020 20:44

Did you post this twice?

KitKatastrophe · 12/08/2020 20:48

Flowers choc and wine i think are usually serious. Like if someone has had a rough time, the others might post flowers like you would give someone flowers in real life.

The yellow flower is apparently a "biscuit". Which I think basically means the poster believes the OP is making a fuss about nothing or is like an eye roll

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 20:50

No i think the yellow flower is a daffodil Daffodil

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 20:51

Biscuit is a biscuit (jammie dodger maybe)

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 20:53

The daffodil is support for teachers I think?

The biscuit is a bit of an eye roll, go away type thing.

Bunches of flowers in thanks or sympathy usually.

Wine, gin, chocolate, cake, cup of tea etc, are usually given genuinely...I think, but I'm sure I once got a sarcastic Brew from someone...I mean, ouch, BURN Wink.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 20:56

The you get the festive ones like Xmas Biscuit

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/08/2020 20:59

The jammie dodger is a sort of sarcastic "congratulations, have a cookie" sort of thing I think. The daffodil is used by teachers for other teachers, but I'm not clear what the origin of it is. Flowers are usually to show sympathy or empathy.

Pipandmum · 12/08/2020 21:05

Ha I thought the biscuit was a red button! As in pop idol or whatever and they want to get rid of the act because they are bad?

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 21:08

@Pipandmum

That's really funny and actually makes more sense than the biscuit tbh!

Where does the biscuit thing come from? Is it because of the biscuit question they ask MPs?

I have a really good friend who works at Westminster and although he has never used MN in his life, he knew all about "the biscuit question" and knew a good few of the answers MPs have given. I actually hadn't heard of it... maybe it isn't even MN and I'm just rambling about nonsense now Grin.

Curiosity101 · 12/08/2020 21:09

I assumed Biscuit was the biscuit in the phrase 'That takes the biscuit'
dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/take-the-biscuit

chuffedasbuttons · 12/08/2020 21:24

It's from many years back on MN but I can't remember why

Like the way people say Pom Bears and Naice Ham. They relate to old and memorable threads.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 21:26

Was it not from a Q&A where someone got asked what their favourite biscuit was? A politician?

Indoctro · 12/08/2020 21:26

Ha ha I thought the Biscuit was in fact a donut
And meant the person is a donut ie a idiot . Oopps 🤣

AlCalavicci · 12/08/2020 21:29

There is a chocolate emoji ! where ?
I think pp are right with the biscuit , it is a way of saying hmm ok if you say so / no big deal .

Flowers are imo always given in sympathy ,
brew = lets have a chat / settling in for a chat ( usually on a long running thread )
Cake = birthday / anniversary
Bear ??? no idea
daffodil not sure but support of teachers or marie curie or the welsh
wine = celebrate / party ( or in my case sozzled )
Star = well done , ie passed driving test
Halo = done something good / ( ie not got sozzled )

gin = get the drinks in / getting sozzled
Football and glitter ball , havent the foggiest , I dont think I have ever seen them been used either .

I would like a beer emoji as I rarely drink wine and never drink gin .

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 21:29

I've googled it and Mumsnet always asks for a politicians favourite biscuit when they get interviewed

dementedpixie · 12/08/2020 21:30

bear is for pombears

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 21:31

MumsyMumIAmNot · 12/08/2020 23:11

Biscuit I thought that was flowers Confused

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 12/08/2020 23:19

The biscuit originally meant “no comment” after (I think it was) Gordon Brown refused to answer the favourite biscuit question. Now it is used as a no comment, or eye roll etc

AHintOfStyle · 12/08/2020 23:28

Gordon Brown would not commit to answering which biscuit was his favourite and gave some kind of 'politicians answer' incase Kit Kat's or digestives would refuse to vote for him if he admitted to liking an orange club.
