Affordable effective skincare - does it exist?

I'm late 20s and up until now my skincare routine has been pretty non existent, cheap Neutrogena face wash and superdrug own face moisturisers (under £5 each) - its really not cutting it, I'm noticing saginess, texture, redness around nose and smile lines and generally not feeling so great about my skin.

I'm determined to get a complete new skincare routine together with some anti ageing products in there and would love some tips and advice as I'm feeling overwhelmed with the amount of products out there..

So far in my basket I have: SPF 50 for my face and a rose quartz roller to help depuff in the mornings

  • I have the ordinary aha bha peeling solution which I've used in the past but just not kept up with it so will start using it again.

I would really love some serums , retinol and recommendations for creams and products that really work but don't break the bank as I can't afford to keep repurchasing £££s worth of products every couple of months - also a cleanser/face wash.

Could anyone point me in the right direction? / Recommend products that work?

I think some products are worth the money, and some not.

I use beauty pie as although you pay £10 a month, the products after that are really good value and pretty much the same price as the high street products

The best products that I have found have all been from Aldi! The Lacura Caviar range in particular is lovely, feels really good on the skin. I was very dubious, but their so cheap that I figured they were worth a try. Now I love them!

ClementineWoolysocks · 12/08/2020 20:26

Nip+Fab Glycolic acid range is fabulous.

QueenCT · 12/08/2020 20:28

Dermatica or skin and me prescription for retinol
Superdrug pure hydrating serum

BilboBercow · 12/08/2020 20:28

The ordinary really is brilliant and affordable

ButtWormHole · 12/08/2020 20:29

Beauty pie. Their capsules are amazing

dementedma · 12/08/2020 20:29

I love Nip n Fab stuff. Often have sales on.Currently using their Retinol Fix Booster Extreme which is good, and the Vit C facewash and Glycolic hand renew cream. All good.

tealandteal · 12/08/2020 20:29

I love face theory, it's all in sustainable packaging, no animal cruelty and it actually works. I have very oily skin so would probably use different products to you, but they do the best lightweight moisturiser.

troppibambini · 12/08/2020 20:38

Style and beauty have some good skin care threads.
I mainly use reasonably inexpensive stuff second the ordinary it's really good and if you email them your skin concerns they will suggest a regime.
The best thing I've used though is tretinoin.

Seconding Beauty Pie - their products are great

DianaT1969 · 12/08/2020 20:58

Nip+Fab glycolic
Garnier citrus oil micellar water
Superdrug hot cloth cleanser (green box)
The Ordinary hydration oils
Nip+Fab exfoliation pads

Stamen196 · 12/08/2020 21:00

I love Zoe Bee Beauty.

Buzzmingo · 12/08/2020 21:03

After several years of using brands such as dermalogica and Elemis, I have been very impressed with FaceTheory like pp.

Reasonably priced and effective, with a money back guarantee. I contacted them after using products for 2/3 weeks with mixed results and they helped me tweak my routine (and offered a refund/exchange with no issues) and my skin has never been better.

Megnificent · 12/08/2020 21:07

So much will depend on exactly how your skin is.
I use a mixture of The Ordinary (Rose hip oil) Pixi (glow tonic) and Paula’s Choice (intensive repair cream & bha liquid exfoliant - I alternate with the Pixi). Oh and just a Simple face wash & day moisturiser.
I used to not pay much attention to my skin, but it ended up in such bad condition - so dry, flaky, red and with lots of fine lines.
I find most of these products last a couple of months a bottle, and it’s improved my skin immensely. But if, for example, you had greasier skin they might not help as much.

Shortandsweet20 · 12/08/2020 21:08

Liz Earle is affordable. They do a taster trio set in boots, you get the cleanser, toner and moisturiser and I really like them! Also the ordinary is affordable!

Caroline Hirons has just released a skin care book which I'd recommend! I've learnt a lot from reading it. Smile

Shmithecat2 · 12/08/2020 21:09

Facetheory stuff is fab. Always have 20% off for orders over £25. I'm also a Beauty Pie fan.

1Morewineplease · 12/08/2020 21:12

Another recent covert to FaceTheory .

My 25 year old daughter has been using their products for a while and her skin looks amazing , blemishes gone.
She had a voucher for 3 for 2 , I think and she asked me if I fancied trying their stuff. So I did and I’m ever so pleased. I’m 56 and have found all my old favourites to be useless or make my eyes water.
There are probably voucher codes to be had.

MrsKoala · 12/08/2020 21:17

Facetheory, the ordinary and beauty pie are brilliant. Everyone I’ve recommended facetheory to has loved it and within 2 weeks had compliments and noticeable improvement.

The Caroline Hirons book is excellent. But you can get all the info on her blogs etc too.

QuestionableMouse · 12/08/2020 21:18

The boots Aqua Luminous range is lovely. I particularly like the Water Concentrate.

I also like the simple skincare range.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 12/08/2020 21:20

Definitely The Ordinary, very affordable and very good.

Confrontayshunme · 12/08/2020 21:22

SPF every day (even when cloudy) is the best kept cheap secret that I feel like no one believes. Also an omega 3 fish oil capsule helps acne more than anything else as you get older. Caroline Hirons has a simple routine and is great.

Welshmaenad · 12/08/2020 21:23

Bravura London is awesome.

Livpool · 12/08/2020 21:24

Some cheaper brands I really like:
Superdrug Vitamin C and E ranges
Lacura (Aldi)
Garner Ultralift
Nip + Fab

imaflutteringkite · 12/08/2020 21:26

Another vote here for face theory. A large range of products to suit most skin types, great customer service and a great price too

wineandsunshine · 12/08/2020 21:28

Indeed labs and pixie glow have transformed my skin. Boots sell both - I can't believe the pigmentations on my forehead have gone!
