Can Ultrasonic Frequencies Harm By Unborn Baby?

Shabba500 · 11/08/2020 12:43

We recently purchased a cat repeller (www.primrose.co.uk/pestbye-battery-operated-ultrasonic-cat-repeller-p-402.html?cPath=24_312_13011) which using ultrasonic frequencies as we've had an issue with them doing their business in our garden.

My partner is 6 months pregnant and when we turned it on for the first time yesterday our baby did the biggest "kick" we've noticed to date as it was in relatively close proximity to the repeller.

Nowhere online or on the instructions/packaging does it say do not use around pregnant women hence us not thinking twice before turning it on in front of my pregnant partner but it did seem to disturb our baby so just wanted to check with people here that this will have not done any damage to our baby or their hearing (that's what I'm hoping anyway but feel free to respond honestly)?

In theory the baby could have heard it, as it does cross the frequency for infant hearing, but it’s equally if not more likely to just be coincidence. It won’t have done any damage - power drops off very quickly with distance. I wouldn’t recommend your partner goes around with it strapped to her stomach but please don’t worry.

For reference - my degree is in medical electronics.

No. It can't do any damage. Much more likely to be coincidence.
I'd be surprised if baby can hear it either - presumably this is a high frequency ultrasound wave to deter cats - although kids can detect higher wavelengths than adults it's still no where near cats levels.
Otherwise they'd be going mental Everytime you had an ultrasound scan. (7-9 megahertz).

I can hear those cat ultrasound things. Not loud but definitely detectable and I'm an adult.

There's no evidence that suggests ultrasonic frequencies are harmful, but scans etc are a relatively new development, therefore there is no longitudinal data upon which to base a definite assertion that they are 'safe'

As my old professor used to say:

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I can hear them and I'm in my 40s

Went to a mates the other night and had to switch them off in his garden cos they were bothering me and another person

I can hear them too. The frequency stated in the spec for the one OP linked is a much wider range than that for a medical scab and definitely into human hearing range.
