To ask how to get rid of house spiders?

Davincisvault · 11/08/2020 11:44

I mean the massive ones that come in from now til end of Oct/ Nov.

Honestly the fear is quite honestly taking over my life Sad I’ll probably have to seek some sort of hypnotherapy but has anyone successfully managed to rid their house of them? I know people say about those plug in things but then often other people say they’re useless.

I have been using Indorex the last couple of years. Last Year I thought I’d conquered them as I only saw 1! Moved house since then and sprayed the whole house, window sills etc about a week ago but since then have seen 3. I just want something that works!

DD is only 13 months but my plan is to teach her to not be scared of spiders, so she can get rid of them for me.

😂😂 what a good idea!

Angelina82 · 11/08/2020 22:54

I tried conkers one year and it actually seemed to work. Trouble is I keep forgetting to go and gather more.

Thecazelets · 11/08/2020 23:09

I'd love to have no fear of spiders, but unfortunately it's not something you can just 'get over'. I am far better than I used to be. I've just watched an old Love It Or List It episode where the couple had a special spider room to keep their tarantula collection. I did not have to leave the room while Phil let one of them crawl over his hands. That's progress for me!

Beamur · 11/08/2020 23:13

I just pretend I haven't seen them...

alexdgr8 · 11/08/2020 23:17

leave them alone.
why this urge to kill.
they are very useful actually, they eat the nasty flies etc.
do try hypnotherapy.
they are an important part of our ecosystem.
can also be a weather predictor; tend to come inside when about to rain.
they can feel it in their legs. learn to live with them.

8thArmouredBrigade · 11/08/2020 23:22

Leave them alone, they eat all the bugs.

littlealexhorne · 11/08/2020 23:33

Why is it so hard for other people to understand that some of us have a genuine phobia of spiders that we can't just 'ignore' or 'get over'? Trust me, if I had a choice in the matter, I wouldn't have this fear.

Oncemorewithfeelin · 12/08/2020 00:05

I used to be a bit scared of the big house spiders, then I had my children and I made sure I was not showing any fear that could rub off on them. I know have a house of wildlife experts who appreciate the coolness of all creepy crawlers.

I was never scared of tarantula type ones and have held them before. It was just the unpredictable big house ones.

We know live in a country with venomous spiders so my children have had to learn they can’t pick up spiders just in case. And we made sure to speak with some spider experts on which ones to avoid rather than hysterical anecdotes.

Serin · 12/08/2020 00:24

Not scared of spiders, I pick them up and take them back outside, but I have literally been sick at the sight of woodlice and armadillos. It's that armour plated look.
Horrible.

Bettysnow · 12/08/2020 00:44

Last year I had a mouse so bought one of those ultrasonic plug ins which apparently deters mice. It stated on the package however that it also repelled insects. Mouse vanished and since then I very rarely get large spiders so definitely works

ISavedTheBee · 12/08/2020 06:18

@Lockheart can I ask where you live?

Redraptor · 12/08/2020 06:32

We had our first one last week. Sitting watching TV and I could see something running around in the dark. I hate them, I grab what ever is nearest and kill them. I've tried conkers but dont think they work. I will buy peppermint oil today

giggly · 12/08/2020 06:48

Being the only adult in my house spider catching is up to me. My dad bought me a betterware long handled spider catcher and what a game changer. I used to put a glass/ Tupperware over and wait for exdh but got rid of him(without the use of the the catcher)
I don’t like spiders and sometimes I let out an almighty scream with a customary ffs that’s a big fucker but my dc are well trained upon first sighting and whoever’s nearest the catcher fetches it and opens the nearest window.
I used to live in Australia and now have an inbuilt reflex Goethe smallish of movement our of the corner of me eye. But that is done the them cockroach fuckers

Oysterbabe · 12/08/2020 07:25

I got my fear from my mum. She would be absolutely hysterical; screaming, crying and shaking (probably trying to be feminine Hmm ) All these comments about them being useful and not harmful don't help at all, do you really think we don't know that? A phobia isn't something that can be reasoned with.

TheScoresOnTheDoors · 12/08/2020 07:34

I'm very frightened of them (also learned behaviour). The first year in our current house I basically spent trapped upstairs at many points until someone else came home. We got a cat and the spiders disappeared (I'm sure they might still be there, but they don't come out). I agree that people commenting to "get over it" are unhelpful - phobias are not rational. I KNOW spiders can't hurt me and it's really the only thing in life I'm frightened of, its an involuntary reaction when I see one- run, panic, etc. I remember reading a story about Gavin Williamson having a pet tarantula in his office when he was the chief whip and thinking that i actually could not habe physically remained in the room to talk to him- just one of the many reasons I think its an idiot! Many many sympathies to all on this thread who feel the same!

Lockheart · 12/08/2020 08:07

@ISavedTheBee I live in England but about half my family live in the US. I have been lucky enough to spend a significant amount of time there, and some of my US family live in Florida - hence the tree frogs and geckos!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 12/08/2020 09:09

Not to worry anyone, but i was recently bitten on my foot by a false window spider!
We have a lot of them in this part of Kent.

The actual bite didn't hurt at all, I didn't even realise it had happened, until a few days after, but the blister became infected and it was bloody awful!

Ameanstreakamilewide · 12/08/2020 09:10

Was the spider watching TV as well??
Davincisvault · 12/08/2020 09:22

Hmm, seems there’s no magic cure to get them to stay away then!

People saying leave them alone, they kill the flies etc, flies I can deal with myself. I’d much rather have flies than these awful things. We never get flies now in the summer anyway as I make sure to only open windows a tiny crack (yes even in that heat) because I don’t want the spiders in.

I know I need to do something about my fear but if I could instead minimise the amount of big beasts coming in each year that would certainly help.

Will get some peppermint oil today and see if that helps too. I’d be really surprised if that, along with the Indorex didn’t deter them!

UncomfortableSilence · 12/08/2020 09:29

I'm terrified of them after waking up as a child with one on my face Sad

1.30am last night I was manically chucking peppermint oil around DDs bedroom after she woke me up for the second night in a row with a huge one on her wall, honestly I just stood there in her room half asleep for a good 5 minutes staring at it wondering what the fuck to do. 2 nights in a row seems a bit suspicious though so will be pulling her room apart today Confused

HowFastIsTooFast · 12/08/2020 10:35

Not necessarily a cure that will work for everyone, but I haven't seen a chonky spider in my flat since the day I got a cat! I used to live in a flat in a granite barn conversion that was a spider magnet but he'd have them caught and polished off before I so much as saw them!

TheSockMonster · 12/08/2020 10:37

There is an evolutionary basis to fear of spiders, although I would imagine it is modified by external experiences, personality, environment, etc.

Personally I have no fear whatsoever of snakes, in fact I find them quite appealing. I have a feeling of repulsion towards spiders, which I expect would have become a full-on phobia if I’d had negative experiences of them. I hide it in front of my DC (who think I like them) but they both still dislike them. I refuse to put them out as they eat bugs, but will move them to another room if they’re upsetting the DC.

wizzbangfizz · 12/08/2020 10:43

Flea bombs! I'm doing it this week - didn't do it last year and the spiders we had were biblical (nw England) - me and our DD were. Absolutely terrified

EvilPea · 12/08/2020 10:46

Yes please do some work on not hating them. The London zoo thing is great really really worth while.

Spiders are brilliant interesting and very very necessary creatures. If you don’t want them in your house just cup and throw them out. They do more good than bad, unlike the stuff they eat! Mine are currently helping keep the flies and mozzies level down.

Morgana7 · 12/08/2020 10:48

I’m beyond terrified of the big fast house spiders. The smaller fat ones that are always on webs in the garden don’t bother me as much (I couldn’t touch one but I can be reasonably close to them). If I see a big house one I will instantly freak out and run out the room crying. If it’s still on the floor and I’m feeling incredibly brave then I can sometimes psych myself up to put a big bowl over it until my DP gets back to remove it. If it’s in an awkward place or on the wall and I can’t get a bowl over it easily then I won’t be able to go in that room until it’s been removed. My phobia began when I was about 3 years old and there was a big one in my bed. I got such a fright and ever since then I’ve panicked when I see one.
