Postpone 8 week vaccinations

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 01:50

Hello all
Just after knowledgeable opinions please. 8 week old is due his first vaccinations tomorrow. I already cancelled them for last Friday as it was 30+ degrees. Was meant to be cooler this week but tomorrow is another hot day and I’m nervous he will get a fever which is hard to manage. I can’t keep him cool even without a fever despite constant feeding, no clothes and fans on.

Should I move it again? Or am I being over dramatic?

Thanks

I wouldnt. It might be an uncomfortable day or two but vaccinations are really important. And you would have consequently pushed back the 12 and 16 week jabs as well because they have to be a certain number of weeks apart.

Can you borrow a fan to help keep you both cool?

KitKatastrophe · 11/08/2020 01:56

Apologies just saw that you already have fans on.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 11/08/2020 01:59

I wouldn’t my boy didn’t get a temp at 8 week ones. Your baby might not either. You can give calpol for them too to manage a temp. Windows closed blinds drawn nappy and wet muslin draped over for. coolness. Please go tomorrow

MrsH497 · 11/08/2020 02:07

My little one didn't get a temp at all with the 8 week ones she was more sleepy and wanted cuddles that was it. Had our 12 week ones yesterday and so far seem to be the same.

I wouldn't postpone them again because of how warm it is as a pp has said you'll have to postpone the 12 and 16 week ones as well

Tolleshunt · 11/08/2020 02:13

I would personally postpone for a few days, as it’s the Uk and likely to only be hot for a few days. The later vaccinations will only be later by those few days too, and current circumstances mean he’s even less likely to come into contact with any of of the diseases that are vaccinated against anyway.

DD had an awfully high temperature after the 8 week jabs, was pretty much unconscious for about 18 hours. No way would I want that on top of an already overly hot baby. They can’t regulate their own temperature at this age. You’d not get a wink of sleep trying to cool him down.

alexdgr8 · 11/08/2020 02:13

don't delay. do it today.
can you dab him afterwards with damp cloth to try to keep cooler.
the weather should break soon anyhow.
all the best.

Robs20 · 11/08/2020 02:28

I have the same dilemma, albeit with the 16 week jabs. I think I am going to postpone a week.

tiredandunoriginal · 11/08/2020 02:34

It’s honestly personal preference as everyone is going to have had different experiences. My own experience was that DS was fine for both 8 and 12 week jabs, waiting on 16 now. (Though he’s 17 weeks). I gave him calpol as soon as I got home to try to prevent a fever. He never got one, and was honestly fine all day if not a little bit more sleepy but nothing unusual!

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 02:35

The weather is due to cool down in literally a few days so postponing can’t be too much off an issue risk wise? I just don’t want him to be too uncomfortable

There is no reason to delay--just get it over with.

VainAbigail · 11/08/2020 07:46

1st jabs have the MMR included and if he reacts the way my son did at his 1st and 3rd jabs, he’ll have a temperature and be crotchety regardless of the weather.

Buy calpol and give it pre-jabs as told to me by the nurse.

eurochick · 11/08/2020 07:50

First jabs fo not have the MMR. 🙄 That is given at one year old.

Apologies for the error - I meant MenB.
EverdeRose · 11/08/2020 08:57

In planning on splitting the 8 week jabs to avoid giving the menB which is the nasty high temp causing one at the same time as the others. Maybe that would be an option for you instead of cancelling

filthyanimal · 11/08/2020 09:00

Don't split them. Get them done. Meningitis B is far more dangerous to your child than a raised temperature for a few hours. Next week there will be another reason to delay. Just do it.

FairfaxAikman · 11/08/2020 09:06

Stock up on calpol and put a damp towel over the fan for extra cooling power.

There is no evidence at all, and the nurses are not actually supposed to do this. There is a highly researched evidence based schedule for nurses to legally follow therefore if you want to change to schedule you pay privately
Rlt8990 · 11/08/2020 11:14

not all babies get a temperature, give the calpol doses as advised by the nurse, and keep baby as cool as you can, please don't delay the weather could change, 2 years ago we had hot weather for pretty much 6 weeks

Monkeynuts18 · 11/08/2020 11:17

I moved my son’s 12 month jabs from Friday to this coming Thursday for this reason.

I didn’t see the point in making him more uncomfortable than absolutely necessary. And couldn’t see much risk in postponing for 6 days.

But it’s up to you!

Ohtherewearethen · 11/08/2020 15:31

We were lucky that my baby didn't have any side effects at all after her jabs so it's not guaranteed that your baby will develop a temperature. I gave her calpol half an hour before the jabs, as advised by the nurse, and she was slightly grumpy but nothing like I was expecting.

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 18:28

He had his jabs and has been out of sorts all day. And now it’s bloody hot and he is very lethargic so I am worried. Keep taking his temperature

Which I had just followed my instincts and pushed back by 3 days

OP posts:
JKDcot · 11/08/2020 18:28

Wish not which

OP posts:
fabulouslyVague · 11/08/2020 18:34

I would postpone a few days due to the heat but we had a different vaccine schedule anyway through choice so tend to be overly cautious anyway
If there’s an appt next week maybe just move it to then

fabulouslyVague · 11/08/2020 18:35

Sorry just seen your update - don’t worry and you can give Calpol which will help with a temperature hope all is ok

YesINameChangeEveryDay · 11/08/2020 18:37

My ds was really tired after his 8 week jags too, it wasn't hot. Give just the appropriate amount of calpol, feed often and let him sleep.
