Have you ever gone to a career coach?

Thinking about having a few sessions with a career coach. Interested in any opinions on how you found it, if you have worked with one? Did you get any new perspectives on how to drive your career forwards?

My friend has a life coach and they discuss her career quite a bit. She loves it and has noticed better balance and achieving targets more. She’s decided to branch into her own business too. Which I don’t think she would’ve done without the life coach. She seems happier for it.

I took voluntary redundancy recently and a friend was just finishing a qualification as a career coach so he offered me a free session if he could write it up and include it as his part of his assessment. It was really useful, he was actually very good at helping me to think about what I wanted to do next.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 11/08/2020 17:47

Highly recommend it!

Current climate, got made redundant, lost confidence...the usual stuff 😔
Wasn’t sure about anything... found one on LinkedIn, wasn’t really looking but her comments and posts came up regularly (I have big network on it) and I thought what can I lose? and contacted her. Had a few sessions and the end I had a clear view of what I needed to do next.

Should I have come the conclusion by myself? Quite possibly... but my head was not at the right place. I benefited from her help!

Yes I used one for a while. Not sure if it was beneficial.

I highly recommend it! I used one as a new mum to think about setting up my own business and never looked back.

Mine was one specialising in new mums but there are lots of gooduns out there

Lucyccfc68 · 11/08/2020 19:23

There are good ones out there and rubbish ones.

Ensure that you look for someone who actually has some qualifications and good reviews, not just Charlotte (Made up name) who is all bubbly and spends her life on Facebook throwing out lots of feel good memes and quotes. Life coaching is unregulated, so there are some right idiots out there, who think they can coach.

Ask them what their coaching methodology is too. If they can’t answer that question or don’t understand it, then walk away. (If they mention the GROW model, then it’s a great start). Coaching isn’t about giving you advice or telling you want to do, but using a recognised methodology to guide you through making the best decisions for yourself. It’s about empowering you to make, meet and exceed your personal and professional goals and helping you to make positive changes.

The type of qualifications you should look for in a coach would be something like an ILM level 5 or level 7 (post grad in coaching). They should also be members of a coaching association, such as the AC (Association for Coaching) or the EMCC UK (European mentoring and coaching council)

Yes, I am a coach (before you ask), but I don’t do life coaching. I coach people in work, mainly Leaders/managers or staff who are looking develop themselves or their career. I have a post graduate in executive coaching.

Lucyccfc68 · 11/08/2020 19:28

Just googled coaching women with ambition and she uses ‘emotional freedom technique tool and DISC, which are both really good coaching tools.

Lemonyfuckit · 11/08/2020 19:41

Ooo watching with interest as I have been wondering about getting some career coaching or mentoring.

SorrelBlackbeak · 11/08/2020 19:49

I had some through work. It was really excellent. It focused me on putting together a business plan which led to a significant pay rise, a new member of staff to support me and an ability to focus on the most interesting work.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/08/2020 19:58

@Lucyccfc68 is 100% right - coaching is brilliant but totally unregulated and I've noticed lots of women popping up on my local facebook offering 'life coaching' - it's starting to feel a bit MLM.

  • check qualifications carefully
  • expect to pay a reasonable amount - my friend who is an exec coach can charge £100s per hour though she does have a sliding scale
  • be clear on your goals and if goals aren't mentioned, run a mile
  • ask for a 'chemistry call' first to see if you can work together as well as a fee scale upfront so you know exactly what's happening
  • coaching should be fairly short-term - you don't want to be coaching in 6 months time - so look out for an awareness of that when you talk.

Apart from all that, go for it - I am a massive advocate of coaching.

I just checked out her page and it looks interesting. Shame she puts her young children all over her public instagram account, that instantly puts me off a person tbh.
AbsentmindedWoman · 11/08/2020 21:05

Thanks for your thoughts. I had a chat yesterday with one, and decided to book a couple of sessions Smile

She is a career coach, I chose her because she worked for years in the careers department of a great uni here in the United States. I left the UK last year (so don't really have any network in my chosen area) and have just completed a postgrad so think her experience aligns pretty well with where I am.

I'm not looking for life coaching, which is more general I think? I'm sure it's good for particular things but I'm focused on the whole job thing at the moment.
