Someone feeding my cat

Why do people do this? Cat has been missing for over a week. He's just turned up, looking very chunky. Really, really frustrating.

You’ve an outdoor cat. YABU if they have a habit of scrounging off of others.

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 09/08/2020 21:43

Infuriating when people do that but greedy cats are very good at acting like a starving lost kitty for extra food.

Someone was feeding my porker. I had to put an extra tag on saying ‘allergies. Do not feed me.’ I still heard the neighbour telling him he would get him a saucer of milk. It wasn’t the neighbour that had to deal with the blood streaked diarrhoea! Grrrr.

I’m glad he’s turned up, hopefully he will stay closer to home for a bit.

It's not hard to just not feed someone's cat though. His collar even says 'do not feed' on it. I'd never feed a random cat.

Buy the book “Six Dinner Sid”. He’s just working the neighbourhood...

Endogal · 09/08/2020 21:46

As PP said, cats are very good at acting as though they are starved at home! Grin You can get bright red "do not feed" collars quite cheap on amazon though

It's so frustrating. He's an old cat and has come back before vomiting and shitting everywhere. Just think it's common sense not to feed a random cat, and if you're concerned about it's welfare take it to have it's chip checked 🤷🏽‍♀️

People constantly post about cats that keep coming to their garden and assuming they’re homeless when clearly they just like laying in the garden and meowing for attention when they see the garden owners. I’ve had to post a note through my neighbours’ doors to ask them not to feed my cat. He’s a ginger Tom and constantly trying to trick people into feeding him!

JemimaShore · 09/08/2020 22:12

My neighbour feeds one of my cats. One is a homely cat, and slim. The other disappears all day then comes back at night for food. She's twice the size of slim cat.

I once dropped round to my neighbours, and my cat was standing in her hallway.

I put two & two together Grin

Can't help you, OP, sorry!

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/08/2020 22:16

I have a cat invader. He won't go home. He gets in through the window that I leave open for my own cat and eats his food.

I brought him to the vet to be scanned, he lives nearl nearby. He stayed away for three days but he's back again. He's really persistent.

It's easy to say don't let him in, but my own cat likes to come and go. How do i stop the determined invader?

Teuchterlass · 09/08/2020 22:18

I feed hedgehogs in my garden. Camera trap shows three cats come and eat it only leaving scraps for the hog. I have tried putting food in a long narrow triangular tunnel but the cats just shimmy along commando style to eat the food. Believe me I would love to NOT feed the cats.

Get a microchip cat flap installed so only your cat can use it.

MumsyMumIAmNot · 09/08/2020 22:23

My next door neighbours cat sleeps on my garden furniture and comes into my house if the back doors left open to have a roam around and eat my cats food. Hes not invited.

We have one of these, it's brilliant.

One of the risks you take when you let your animal roam is that you lose control over where they go, what they do, and what they eat.

The only way to make sure other people aren't feeding him (or he's not stealing!) is to keep him inside.

julybaby32 · 09/08/2020 22:29

Friend had some random cat coming in through various windows and eating her dog's food. (not the biscuits, just the meaty stuff.) Possibly the world's most non- assertive dog. He was getting on a bit to be honest and certainly deaf in one ear and mostly in the other. I can only guess that his sense of smell was going too. His sight certainly was.

julybaby32 · 09/08/2020 22:30

You wouldn't have wanted the windows close all the time in that house either. The poor dog's digestive system wasn't always what it once was

TheHighestSardine · 09/08/2020 22:44

A chip reading cat flap has taken a third off our catfood bill. No joke.

Catsup · 09/08/2020 22:54

Embarrassingly my DCat mooches a few doors up and shoehorns himself through their cat flap to demolish everything in their cat bowl. They said he's actually got stuck before and they had to physically push his lardy rear back out 🥳. Fortunately they are very nice about and don't mind his visits 😳. I clearly have no answers as Dc blatantly refuses to read his 'please do not feed me collar'.

TrainspottingWelsh · 09/08/2020 22:57

In the past I've nearly always had feral farm cats, consequently nearly always had uninvited dinner guests for the barn buffet. When I first moved in, a neighbours cat frequently marched in and would eat anything that stayed still long enough. One of the current cats has a habit of bringing friends home, on occasion they have assumed the invite included a meal. So it's quite possible nobody is actively feeding him.
