Snacks

Posting for traffic.

Can I ask what are your best low calorie snacks? I've put on about 400 stone during lockdown. Anyone have any nice go-to snacks for when they've got the munchies that don't have a day's worth of calories in them? Preferably something tastier than a cardboardy oat cake or a celery stick.

Sugar free jelly. Checked In Asda and some pots have 1 calorie in them!

I just don’t snack. Eat plenty of protein, fat, fibre etc at each meal. Keeps me going until the next meal.

Sorry not much help.

Apples
Low calorie crisps like squares
Cup soups
Crackers and salsa

Cup of tea or glass of water.

Nuts or avocado. Not low calorie, but filling and full of nutrients. Better than rice cakes or other empty carbs. Try to reduce the next meal slightly to compensate.

Fruit/veg never cut it for me, so I usually pour out a small bowl of popcorn/mini cheddars/tortilla chips and graze on that instead. It's got to be something that needs to be chewed, so biltong's another favourite. It takes so long to chew that you kind of fool your body into thinking you've eaten more than you have, whereas soft mushy stuff just gets swallowed too easily.

Frozen grapes. They're like awesome little 2 calorie ice lollies.

Soupy-broth stuff fills you up. I like a miso soup with seaweed, or a thin pea soup from blending peas with a tasty stock. Probably not everyone’s idea of a great snack though!

I'm saving this thread so I can eat EVERYTHING on it tomorrow.

Pom bears. 69 calories a bag.

Something with protein in.
Apple slices and a tbsp nut butter
Mini souffles - make in a yorkshire tin and freeze
100g yoghurt and fruit
Toasted cinnamon nuts.
Small protein smoothie

Look up Louise Parker snacks for inspiration

A few cashew nuts.

Do you have a sweet or savoury palette. If sweet fruit chopped finely with a low fat yogurt. Fruit granola soaked over-night in yoghurt.
I always make a huge pot of soup with big chunky vegetables and chickpeas add some spices and chilli to give it a kick.
My sister makes her own fibre brownies too.

I like roasted chickpeas - drain and rinse a can, pat them dry, and then toss them with a little olive oil and salt. You can add other flavours as well - lemon, harissa, garlic, chilli, whatever you like. Spread on a baking tray, and roast for 20 minutes at 200c. I then keep them in a jar. A small handful is a lovely snack, and you can add them to salads etc as well. They’re full of protein so they fill you up, and they have a really strong flavour so even a small amount is satisfying.

I also like carrot sticks and hummus. Hummus can be high calorie so portion control is important, but a tablespoon of hummus and a carrot cut into batons is very delicious and good for you too.

You could also try tomatoes tossed with garlic and a bit of salt on a crisp bread or Ryvita.

Kids ice lollies are my new thing - the ones you get in multipacks in the supermarket. Mini Twister only has about 40 calories.

Otherwise

  • carrots
  • an apple
  • peppermint and liquorice tea
  • rice cake with low fat spreadable cheese

Ignore all the people who never need to snack. Everyone has different appetites and metabolisms. I’m a little and often person - can’t eat very large meals yet would faint with hunger if I didn’t eat till the next one.

Daftodil · 10/08/2020 13:02

Ooh, harissa chickpeas sound lovely!

Thanks everyone for all these suggestions 😊

Frozen grapes! Absolute game changer for me

crosstalk · 10/08/2020 14:07

Voting for a glass of tomato juice, ice, lemon, chilli sauce, soya sauce and a dollop of yoghourt/kefir if really hungry.

It takes so long to make (look at the despair on barstaff faces when you order a Virgin or Bloody Mary in pubs) that it stops me reaching for anything else.

Maybe a side order of gherkin.
