AIBU to think that the police have got better things to do

We live in a road with no on street parking. Not a problem because every house has a driveway with parking.

We are having some building work done so in order to allow the builders van to park on our driveway, dh moved my car into the next road. The next road has on street parking but as everyone has a driveway very few people park on the street so theres loads of parking there.

I know all.the neighbours in the next road, it's not very big. Yesterday one of them came round to ask if it was my car parked there as they didn't recognise it and neither did other people in the road, so they thought it might have been abandoned. She wanted to check if it was mine before ringing the police to report it as abandoned.

I did ask if dh had parked badly, was it blocking anyone access. She assured .e it wasn't, no one had a problem with it, they were just worried because no one in the street knew where it had come from.

Fair enough you might think. Except that dh moved the car to there on Thursday, and by Saturday the neighbours had decided that my (5 year old, very good condition) car needed to be reported to the police as it had been abandoned. At this point it had been there for less than 48 hours.

AIBU to think that you don't report this sort of thing to the police as it just wastes their time.

Your Car was parked on adjacent street and neighbours not recognising it,reported to police, as an abandoned car?
I’m guessing it’s an affluent area and quiet estate Where a strange car provokes a reaction
Abandoned cars are usually in state of disrepair,so it wasn’t in a state?
I guess it’s very hypervigilant individuals

Maybe they had no intention of ringing the police, and it was their passive aggressive way of letting you know they don't like you parking there? Bit silly really, if it wasn't causing any problems.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/08/2020 17:49

@defenbaker that did occur to me! I am fairly friendly with most of them, so I would be surprised but it possible.
I did pop round to look at the car this morning to check it's not in anyone's way. Dh has parked it alongside a hedge away from everyone's driveway. There is only one house on that side of the road and it's a long way from.that.

My car is in pretty good condition, nothing to suggest it had been abandoned, and had. been there for less than 48 hours. I just thought it strange that they were on the verge of ringing the police!

Some folks are really territorial, Anything they perceive as encroachment or rule breaking is a big deal

Gobbycop · 09/08/2020 17:54

Yes, the police have better things to do.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 09/08/2020 17:58

To be fair, the police don't have better things. The vast majority of 'crimes' the police deal with is petty crap just like this.
Easier to meet targets dealing with minor issues than tackle big issues.

That's why they police wrong think in Hull. Like Harry The Owl.
Or hound a teenager for crossing the street in Staffordshire.
Or chase dog walkers in Derbyshire with drones like during lockdown.

I can see both sides. If a fairly new car was parked on our street out the way then maybe I'd of done a quick check on Google to see if it was reported missing. We do have an issue with nice cars being stolen and left in our area for them to come back for though.

CasaLuna · 09/08/2020 18:02

Yep, curtain twitchers wasting everyone’s time! Really no need to start gossiping and talk of “reporting” a car that’s been parked on their street for 48 hours. I wish that was all I had to care about in life.

I realised mid-May that there was a car opposite which had been there for three months (they obviously had no use for it during lockdown) but I still don’t know who it belonged to, it was there another week or two, and then just gone one day. Nice car, fairly new, clean, parked well... who cares.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/08/2020 18:08

But what would they be reporting? A check online would have shown them the car was taxed. It's not the sort of desirable or sporty car which might have been stolen.

I get that they were interested in why the car was there but there are potentially lots of explanations only one of which would have involved the car being stolen.
