AIBU to want to recycle carrier bags

Posting in AIBU for traffic.

We have acquired hundreds of carrier bags during lockdown (mostly Tesco). Does anyone know what we can do with them? I really don’t want to throw them away but we don’t have room to keep collecting them!

Recycle them, there’ll be a collection box just inside your local tesco

Do you get home deliveries? You can give them to the driver. Don't you have reusable bags?

lughnasadh · 09/08/2020 16:35

Give them to the food bank, they always need them. They take those strong bag for life ones too.

WidowTwonky · 09/08/2020 16:35

@oysterbabe Home deliveries weren’t allowed to take items back. Has that changed recently?

enjoyingscience · 09/08/2020 16:35

@Oysterbabe the delivery services and click and collect have had mandatory bags since lockdown started. It’s a huge pain - initially they wouldn’t even take them back to recycle. Not sure if they are again now. The top of our fridge is a state.

I had the same issue- particularly from Click and Collect orders. We have a recycling drop off roll-pallet with plastic sides outside our Tesco Extra branch to recycle the bags. Before this arrangement (with a proper, printed sign), there was a large transparent bag outside the shop.
Ask a staff member and if there’s no ‘official’ arrangement then the manager should take action to set up a system.

I know Ocado aren't taking the bags back at the moment. I don't think anyone wants something back that has been in someone's house.

Recently I returned something I bought online to the shop and they asked me to take the bag I brought it to the shop in away with me versus them throwing it away as they would have done pre Covid.

My local charity shop always need them. Oxfam wont take them, but others do. Otherwise most supermarkets used to have a recycling box for them in store.

Food bank, my local one has struggled to source bags since the 5p charge began and fewer/free bags were easily available.

islandislandisland · 09/08/2020 16:57

I have so so many as well from click and collect orders. The annoying thing is that they have holes in so no good for taking out the cat poo which is what I'd normally use them for.

BackforGood · 09/08/2020 16:58

Throughout this, I've been collecting them from all my neighbours who have deliveries, and taking them to the local food bank.
I am practically mobbed every time I go in there, they are so grateful Grin
Though I don't know why all their regulars can't return their bags

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 09/08/2020 16:59

We’ve got 100s - does anyone know if Waitrose take them back again yet ?

Drumple · 09/08/2020 17:00

Food bank as everyone has said

TempName01 · 09/08/2020 17:04

Thanks I never thought of food bank, great idea!

I use them for non recyclable rubbish that goes in the main big bin. Line the kitchen and small bins it soon uses them up.
