What do you think would happen if all women just suddenly decided to stop having babies?

Some would still be born through rape but if the entire world population of women said "No" to procreation...what would happen to the world?

Probably something a bit like Owase in Japan

@Paintedmaypole

Do people really have kids to keep men? From my observation it is more likely to cause a certain type of man to piss off and leave. Reading this thread you would think no woman wanted children or enjoyed them and that they were somehow forced into motherhood.
Of course the men pass off. That's why the move to the next man, and the next baby that doesn't provide the desired relationship glue.
FrootTheLoot · 09/08/2020 15:25

What would happen to the actual planet? I'm sure it would thrive and end up in a much better state.

CatandtheFiddle · 09/08/2020 15:27

I think men would capture the women and try to force them to procreate

Yup. Rape has always been a weapon of war, and a way of controlling women.

It already happens in quite a lot of places around the world.

quizqueen · 09/08/2020 15:29

I'd love to see the human race phased out.

commentatorz · 09/08/2020 15:35

To all the people saying they'd love for the human race to die out, there's an easy way for you to get closer to your goal

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 15:36

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Children_of_Men

Another dystopian novel "Swastika Night" (Katharine Burdekin, writing as Murray Constantine, publishers 1937) also explores this scenario, from the perspective of the Nazis (not then at war, but whose policies were well-known) having established their "1,000 Year Reich", in which Germany and Japan had conquered the world (war hadn't broken out, so the author was pretty prescient!) and effectively a "Warrior" cult developed, with women being kept purely as sex and breeding machines. Treated as animals, they become infertile.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 15:42

If it led to the value of labour going up so you couldn't treat people like dirt then the creeping realisation would make the monied classes shit themselves.

One of the things which gave the poor a little bit of power was the bubonic plague in the 14th century. So many peasants died, that those remaining were much in demand and could command much higher wages(though those who didn't work on the land suffered from the inflation that resulted from manual workers who could demand high wages).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 15:44

I'd love to see the human race phased out.

I'd certainly like us to limit our numbers and be kinder to each other and the environment.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 15:45

It would eventually re-balance and thrive - and hopefully an equivalent of us wouldn't come along.

OK, let's accept the basic premise that all females everywhere decide not to have any more children (although that's pretty massive)! How would this pan out as a TV series?

  • males will try to persuade females, then force them, to breed (lots of narrative mileage in this, including threatening existing children, restricting job access etc)
  • females will have anticipated this (organised event? Secret?) and planned ahead
  • long-acting contraception or MAPs will be available to females who plan ahead; backstreet sterilisations will increase
  • some females will double-bluff and make it look like they've had surgery but not actually do it.... just in case they change their mind
  • more radical approaches where females deliberately get teratogenic substances implanted so any children they bear don't survive (on purpose, to discourage the forcing element)

Once established as a new system, males would have to compete for the chance to have progeny. Power tips to the females and predictably it doesn't always end in a kind way.

Eventually, inevitably, a resistance that includes females will rise.

Society eventually tips back to a recognisable version of what we have today, but with way more protections for females.

It's basically a variation on The Handmaid's Tale and The Power; I'd quite like to see it made Grin

rosiethehen · 09/08/2020 15:50

Somebody needs to invent a device that a woman can use by herself to ensure that she can terminate an early pregnancy safely and easily.

Men would also need women to care for the babies and children, so I suppose if they refused to do that the babies wouldn't survive.

Exactly. Something the ruling classes have never forgotten, and done their level best to ensure the working classes do forget. Or indeed as is now the case, never knew to start with.

unmarkedbythat · 09/08/2020 15:54

A LOT would be born due to rape.

Contraception would become illegal and hard to access.

Ditto abortion.

Come on, you think men would let us just say no?!

Augustseemsbetter · 09/08/2020 15:57

Tbh I've never known a man who admitted to actively wanting children.

We are as a pp pointed out in a slo mo version of this.

In countries with democracies I think most individuals and their elected governments would enjoy the short term benefits of the freedom from costs and responsibilities.

TheChristmasPrincess · 09/08/2020 15:57

State approved or even state mandated forced procreation (Rape!)

Dark!

Immigrantsong · 09/08/2020 16:03

OP by reading most threads on MN if anything the picture of women that chose to procreate with complete and utter morons willingly emerges. And not just once, but many times over. And over.

So I just don't see how we can ever expect the scenario you are laying out when women have low standards and will allow any loser to father their children and then wonder why they make such a shitty partner and father.

DGRossetti · 09/08/2020 16:03

You could be describing the present situation in quite a few US states.
ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 09/08/2020 16:07

The forcing won't come from individual men, though they will be blamed and recruited to carry out any forcing.

It will come from the wealthy, the people in power etc once the work force dwindles, the cannon fodder(army, navy, police etc) dwindles and countries become vulnerable and so on.

It won't matter if Steve down the road wants children or not. He will be told it is his right to have a child, his duty to the country, women will be blamed for any and side effects . There will be a narrative of how women can help but they don't want to, they are selfish and evil and enjoying the downfall of everyone. How they caused it all. Go on Steve, help yourself, help your country! Do your duty!

Apologies to any Steves out there, first name that popped in my head.

unmarkedbythat · 09/08/2020 16:08

DGRossetti Yep. Not for one moment do I believe women across the globe will achieve full bodily autonomy without something like The Power happening, and even then what happens to Roxy later on would happen to a whole fucking lot of us.

And having read a load of bullshit on here recently about how women in labour shouldn't mind if their decisions as to who should be present, who should see what, what should happen etc are not respected I imagine a whole load of women would support the ongoing removal of our choices.

RantyAnty · 09/08/2020 16:09

The world would go on but it would heal from all the damage humans caused. More birds, animals, fish, plants

Regularname · 09/08/2020 16:14

If sex continued I think at the start a lot of the men and women would carry on happily. As individuals a lot of people both men and women would be happy and some men very happy as presumably women would be absolutely sure to take contraception.

After that I think there would be incentives. I suspect a lot of powerful men and women would worry about the future- who would look after them or their parents as they aged?

I don’t just think it would be men. Although women might not want to have children themselves and want that choice for any existing daughters on the day I wouldn’t put it past them to either actively take part in coercion or forced withholding of contraception. Most likely men taking the decision and women in positions of power not intervening.

Augustseemsbetter · 09/08/2020 16:19

Oh no, now the innocent Steves will have to join forces with the beleaguered Karens !

My point is that in a democracy with this scenario happening (and essentially it is) the powers that be need no such immediate moves. Nor would they be capable of it. They just import adults if there were surplus elsewhere, to keep the system going for as long as possible.

It's similar to borrowing world money to keep everything afloat.

Augustseemsbetter · 09/08/2020 16:21

Anyway, why has noone come up with the Brave New World incubator scenario?

Or have I misremembered that after 40 years?!

DGRossetti · 09/08/2020 16:21

Rich people will just pay poor women to have their babies. Much as now before really.
