I'm moving back to the UK - my 13-year-old lives in shorts and T-shirts and will need a brand new wardrobe. How much do you usually pay for your son's trainers? Are white ones preferable or coloured/dark ones preferable? I keep hearing that Nike is the most popular.

Anything from 50 to a couple of hundred quid

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 09/08/2020 08:55

Nike outlet store here so usually around £30 because he has stupidly wide feet that don't fit the cheaper ones!

Rewis · 09/08/2020 08:56

For what purpose are the trainers for? If just for casual wear then why not just let him pick the ones he likes and you decide if you can afford them

Idontbelieveit12 · 09/08/2020 08:56

My son is 12 his two pairs of trainers are black with coloured details. One pair was £80 one were £30 in the sale. My 13 year old has size 8 feet so hers are adult prices.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/08/2020 08:57

It really depend on what you / your son want that question is a bit ' how long is a piece of string' . You can buy nikes for £40 at Sports direct (ethically I wouldn't support the owner though) or you can buy ££££ ones from the Nike store. What style does you child like? Do they need they for sport too or just for fashion?

Whatsmynextmove · 09/08/2020 09:05

It varies massively. Trainers for PE at school could be £30-40 from Sports Direct, his other trainers range from £50-100 depending.

LunaHardy · 09/08/2020 09:18

My DS has just gone from a size 6 to a size 7 which means he is now in adult sizes in most shops and the price has shot up for his trainers. I wouldn't spend more than £100 on a pair of decent trainers. For day to day pairs I would probably spend around £40/50.

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 09/08/2020 09:19

White AirMax are about £80.

Lolwhat · 09/08/2020 09:51

Around £40-£100

CatsArePeopleToo · 09/08/2020 10:00

Around £50 plus minus. Anything more is just not worth it.

kingdomcapers · 09/08/2020 10:02

Yep the leap from youth to adult range is awful price wise. I've never gone over £100 for any of my three. Can often find something they like in outlets, especially if it's football boots or for school PE. They are fussier for trainers to go out and meet friends etc but usually ask at Birthdays or Xmas or put pocket money towards them.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 09/08/2020 10:10

Thankfully my teen son hates trainers with a passion, so I’ve dodged this particular bullet with him. He lives and dies in walking boots/shoes. He is a rather odd specimen of a teen though :o

My youngest likes the garish trainers, but was distracted by some leather Cons instead, which were a rather pleasant £20 in the sale. I usually pay for cheap and cheerful Nike for his PE trainers. Thankfully he’s quite easy going, so I will hope for understanding as he gets older because I won’t be paying more than about £40 for trainers, ever.

mellowgreenspring · 09/08/2020 10:29

My 13 year old chooses his own trainers, so converse are around £30-£40 in and Nike anything from 60-120 depending on which season etc.

We buy loads from eBay as well he loves a Bargin.

HerNameWasEliza · 09/08/2020 10:33

I just bought my 13 year old DD a pair for £15 from the supermarket. They are for very occasional wear though and she has reasonably standard feet. Obvs not a designer brand but I don't like to buy just for a name. I got her school shoes - leather trainer type for £40.

TeetotalKoala · 09/08/2020 10:36

My 9 year old destroys normal trainers at the toes. I genuinely don't know how he does it. So we only buy him Converse now as the toes are indestructible. We're lucky that we have an outlet near us, so I recently picked him up a new pair for £15. He chose the ones he wanted. He's currently in size 4, I don't think we'll be long before he makes that jump to adult size.

As a PP poster said, ask him what he wants, consider how he wears things and decide whether you are prepared to pay it. I wouldn't pay £50+ for a pair of Nike for DS as I know he's destroy them. But I would pay that for some Converse that he desperately wanted for Christmas/birthday. DH and I both like a discount code to get the price down if we can though.

WonderWebbs · 09/08/2020 10:56

My teenager DD prefers asics £40-£50 for school and exercise. For casual trainers Stan Smith or something similar around £75.
