When will the day come when the majority of people look back and say

"How the fuck was Mrs Brown's Boys ever prime time viewing?" like they do with a lot of old shows?

Don't get me wrong. I know a lot of people are already asking themselves this question but a lot of people seem to watch and enjoy it, as I understand it.

I thought we were over blokes dressing up as women for comedy. Evidently not.

@sunnysidegold

I'm from NI. And I am so embarrassed that the rest of the UK sees this programme as what must be our best attempt at comedy.

I'm fact, I'm pure affronted (to use a good ni phrase!).

But you gave us Derry Girls, so all is forgiven.

Derry Girls is utter shite as well, I don’t understand why anyone finds it funny. It’s just so predictable

@sunnysidegold Don't worry NI had produced some cracking telly in recent years (Derry Girls, the Fall) nobody sees Mrs Brown's Boys as representative of NI ( I thought it was filmed in Scotland)

I don't love Mrs Brown's Boys but watch it occasionally. There's alot of warmth in it even if it is rather silly.

Never seen it, only when flicking channels. Looks offensive to me.

MBB is the most offensive, badly written dross I've seen in a long time. I can only assume people think it's ironic.

It's just silly slapstick style comedy. I don't get the hate.

Report
Dinosforall · 09/08/2020 09:19

It's aimed at all those people who regard the 1970s as a lost golden age of telly.

Forever grateful that this shit is no longer the mainstay of entertainment.

But like, what's wrong with it?

I think it's hilarious, or am I missing something? Confused

Report
CompleteBarstool · 09/08/2020 09:29

I've only ever watched about 10 mins of it and thought it was awful.

I can't think of one person I know who likes it or has recommended it.

Possibly the worst programme to ever air - I was utterly shocked that it was on the BBC, and even more shocked at its popularity. Everything about it is awful. There is no real humour whatsoever for anyone with a modicum of intelligence. The "jokes" are poor - the punchlines can be seen a mile off. The acting is abysmal and the whole set is tacky. The bad language is completely unnecessary and everything about it is an utter disgrace....

I’ve tried really hard to see why it’s so popular but, no, I just don’t get it.

It is the best argument against the licence fee there ever was.

I find it a really useful yardstick for deciding whether to bother with someone I've just met - I'm unlikely to have much in common with anyone who finds it hilarious

I remember seeing viewing figures for Mrs Browns Boys (perhaps for one Christmas) and then seeing statistics about the number of people with mental illness, and they were about the same. Awful of me to minimise the impact of mental illness and I regret this, but you can imagine what I think how bad Mrs Browns Boys is.

As for the comment about it being nostalgia for the 70s tv, the one episode I saw had language that would never have been on tv in the 1970s.

It’s horrendous, totally dislike it. DH loves it, we don’t watch it together.

Sunnyrainshowers · 10/08/2020 10:03

I don't think it's that bad. I don't watch it but I really admire Brendan O'Carroll and am happy for him that he's been successful.

I don't get why people get so worked up about it, just switch over if it's not for you

I’ve never actually watched it, but I went to the evening version of the show as my then partner was performing on it. Brendan was extremely unpleasant, Ray Mears was on the same episode (he was lovely) and Brendan was particularly unpleasant and made some awful (non-jokey) comments about his appearance.

Absolutely awful.
Put me off reading Adam Kay books as well when I found out he's one of the writers for this dross.

I have always viewed some things as not to my taste (opera, crime dramas for example) but appreciate that they have qualities and skill and will never object to others watching them. I can understand that 'brain dead' tv where people don't have to think, such as Top Gear or some reality shows, has a place.

Then there are some things that are just bad or worse, and Mrs Browns Boys is one.

Report
userbbb · 10/08/2020 20:15

I mean it's not great but the worst thing on TV? nope.
