Can’t get plug in timers to work - help pls

Hi, I have an old plug in timer hat I use to get a lamp to come on when it gets dark (was burgled last year). It works fine.

I bought these 2 additional ones from B&M that I just can’t get to work. Took them back to B&M but they wouldn’t exchange them as I I’ve lost the receipt.

Anything I might be doing wrong? I’ve definitely set to correct time and pressed up correct time notches.

Thanks

Try them with all the notches up then again with all the notches down on the kettle -or something you definitely know works- just in case it’s the lamp/bulb and spin the time wheel, sometimes they just are very sensitive so you need to set it a notch earlier than the 21:00 you want.

I know I have one lot of timers that work the opposite way to another one that I have and it confuses me every time so I usually end up spinning the time wheel with switches up then down to get it to click on so I can figure it out.

Did you pay by card? Some stores will accept a bank statement as a proof of purchase if you’ve lost the actual receipt.

Can you post a pic of the sides of the units? I’ve had some with a on/timer/off switch on the side.

iklboo · 08/08/2020 18:00

Really silly question but is the plug itself turned on? My folks called us having similar problems and it turns out the socket was switched off.

iklboo · 08/08/2020 18:01

YY to the on / off switch at the side too. Not always obvious which is which!

Grumblyberries · 08/08/2020 18:09

And similar to the question about the socket actually being on, but also - is the lamp itself turned on? Mine had a switch on the light bulb that had to be on , not just the socket!

Thanks all, sorry for the delayed response, was spring cleaning. I will try all the suggestions now. Yes, I triple checked the plug / lamp was on!

@bonjonbovi here is a pic of the side

Is the issue that they're permanently on? If so, slide that black thing down. That should switch it to timed rather than on all the time.

whydobirds · 09/08/2020 11:20

Or either way if they're not coming on at all, slide the black thing down. I can't work out if the top symbol is supposed to be on or off but the lower one is definitely 'timer'

honeygirlz · 09/08/2020 11:26

Thanks all! Have set it for 11.30 or so! And pushed to timer. Lamp and plug on. Fingers crossed it comes on.

Did it work?

honeygirlz · 09/08/2020 12:25

No iklboo 😭

I’ve decided to go out for a bit and have now set it for 6pm-10pm.

I would so get digital ones next time.

Placemarking to figure this out. I have the same problem, bought them from Argos.

Moonfig · 09/08/2020 13:50

Have you turned the lamp itself on? It should be on with the timer set to the clock position.

TeenPlusTwenties · 09/08/2020 13:54

Sometimes the thing you are timing doesn't draw enough current or something (or too much). We have problems sometimes with our Christmas lights.

So try timing something else.
