Toxoplasmosis during pregnancy

Unfortunately, I just found out that I was infected with toxoplasmosis possibly shortly before or after conception. The test can’t pinpoint the exact time. I was tested at 11 weeks so it must have been some time before then. The next step is to start spiramycin and have an amino at 18 weeks. I'm really unclear as to what to expect as to the likelihood of a child having symptoms early and later in life. I would really appreciate some advice.

I'm sorry to hear this, I dont have any knowledge. You may be better asking this to be moved to the pregnancy board. You may find people with experience of this x

Sorry you are facing this. Tommy’s are an amazing support charity associated with St Thomas’ Hospital and support women experiencing complicated pregnancy. There is a fair bit of information on the page I’ve linked above and a helpline you can call for more information.

Obviously you can and should also ask your consultant to answer your questions. I recommend you write the questions down and also the answers.

Best wishes.

So if you were infected a few weeks preconception less than 1% of baby being infected
In first trimester 10-15% - the odds of the baby being affected seem higher the further along you are when you are infected

I had this (supposedly) though quite some while ago so procedures may well have changed. Also in theory in first trimester.

I had monthly scans to pick up potential problems. Was told I could abort at any time Hmm. No problems picked up and have a healthy 20 year old child now.

I was told that the odds of passing the infection on are low, and the earlier in the pregnancy you were infected, the lower the risk of transmission. But the consequences for the foetus are more serious if the infection was passed on early on, and these get less serious throughout the pregnancy. You should talk to your doctor about all the options and potential consequences. I would write down all your questions as they occur to you, and take someone with you to your next appointment to provide support and help you get answers to all your questions. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with all of this and the stress and worry it must be causing. I'll keep my fingers tightly crossed for you.

I don’t mean to second guess anything medical but have they looked at your booking bloods again as well as the current test and is it not likely to be a historical infection? There are two tests that help determine this. I tested positive but after reviewing my booking bloods they just said it was likely historical as many people have it historically.
