To ask what on earth 13 year old boys wear these days?

We live overseas in a place that never rains, as at result my just turned 13-year-old lives in shorts and T-shirts. It is chilly for a couple of months in the winter and he wears unbranded tracksuits when not in school.

We're moving back to the UK and I literally have no idea what 13-year-old boys wear in the UK. I've promised him a new wardrobe when we get there and don't want to unknowingly buy him clothes that would be bully fodder. Any info on what your boys around this age are wearing would be much appreciated? What shops? Brand etc. TIA

Mine only wears nike. Addidas Tshirts are ok. Though.

Chocolatecake12 · 08/08/2020 17:56

I have a ds13. He will wear nike but not Adidas, vans but not converse.
He has a few superdry t shirts and a hoodie but that’s not as cool as hollister, jack wills and Abercrombie. He fits into men’s small size and I buy stuff in sales.
I usually get unbranded jeans etc and branded tops.
Vans or Nike trainers.

User27aw · 08/08/2020 17:57

My 2 are 12 and 15 and arent bothered about labels. Most of their clothes are primark - shorts tshirts plain trackie bots, hoodies. The 15 year old wears a lot of football shirts/tshirts. The 12 year old wears shorts all year round.

Starlightstarbright1 · 08/08/2020 17:59

@capricorn12

Not sure if everywhere is the same but round here, colour seems to have been banned. My 17 and 12 year old DS's have wardrobes any Goth would be proud of. There is a tiny bit of grey but 90% of it is black. My eldest graduated from dressing like a burglar (all black) to wearing a light grey tracksuit that made him look like he was in prison..... I have suggested that he may like to progress to an orange boiler suit but he didn't seem keen.
This made me 🤣🤣🤣.

My Ds likes Adidas and Nike he has some tops from M&M.

I agree with the person who said it’s all about the trainers

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/08/2020 19:06

My 14 year old DS will wear Next jeans but would prefer Levi's. Black is the preferred colour. He has a huge collection of Tommy Hilfiger t shirts and hoodies/sweatshirts ( always bought in the asos sale ) he won't wear anything else at the moment. For trainers he says Nike is ok but Adidas not ( no idea why) He only wears joggers if lounging around the house or actually doing sport so he's ok with them coming from Next or Primark. When not in jeans he's in jersey shorts from Nike , Next or ASOS. If we go out together as a family the jersey shorts are swapped for chino type ones from Next.

Bullying and teasing about clothes is a thing he worries about - he goes to a school where a lot of the families have money and they are all in designer gear on non uniform days. He hates non uniform days for this reason as I won't buy him the expensive designer stuff.

Goingdownto · 08/08/2020 19:11

Constant sports wear, though he is branching out into the occasional day in jeans now. Nike for trainers. Have got Adidas masks for school Blush

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 08/08/2020 19:16

I have a ds who is 12. He wears Nike tracksuit bottoms and t shirts and plain t shirts/shorts from h&m or primark. If he wears jeans, they are always skinny. Only colours he wears are black, white and dark green or grey.

My 12 year old DS is almost exactly the same.

Emeraldshamrock · 08/08/2020 20:26

Very expensive clothing these days.
I think I'd one pair of Levi's before I started working to pay for my own.

louleey · 08/08/2020 20:35

My DS is 12 and going through that phase where he would like to wear only designer clothes-no chance! He has a couple of D squared t shirts which he wears when he sees friends but he mostly lives in Nike and Adidas dry fit tracksuit bottoms or football style shorts when hot, and the Nike or Adidas football training style tops. But then he does play football most days. I think in terms of brands to avoid it really depends on area. I think a lot of boys like stone island but my DS finds it chavvy

NotMeNoNo · 08/08/2020 20:39

I have one who went into everything from Sports Direct (mainly adidas) at that age and one who went into top to toe black jeans and hoodies.

toptomatoes · 08/08/2020 20:41

Mine wait Nike T-shirts, occasional Adidas or under armour, football shorts mostly, a few plain t-shirts, a couple of pairs of unbranded jeans, Nike hoodies or branded training tops, Nike Air trainers.

CarolEffingBaskin · 08/08/2020 20:42

I have one 12 and one 13. Eldest wears skinny jeans and plain t shirts. Hoodies if he loves them enough.

Younger one also skinny jeans, but like cycling style tops. Again, hackers/hoodies whenever he can get away with it.

Neither of mine have any interest in sports wear and/or named brands - which is pure luck, they’d have the odd bit as gifts if they wanted but they don’t.

MrsJBaptiste · 08/08/2020 20:52

My 13 year old wears a mixture of brands and Primark/Next so Hype trakkies with a Primark t-shirt or Next trakkies with an Adidas t-shirt.

The 16 year old is designer brands only (he wishes!) but again, it's sportswear only.

Sosososotired · 08/08/2020 20:57

As other have said, Nike, Adidas and Under Armour. Most teens I know including mine wear mainly tracksuits.

cjpark · 08/08/2020 21:00

Ds is 13. He's either in sports kit or preppy brands like Tommy, Ralph Lauren and Lacoste with basics from Next.

JingleCatJingle · 08/08/2020 21:03

Skinny jeans from H&M and t-shirts from uniqlo as they wash well and have cool designs.

mamamia2020 · 09/08/2020 08:50

Thanks for all the advise. I don't want him to be a slave to fashion but its good to get an idea of what other boys his age are wearing. When it comes to trainers, is there a particular colour? Do most steer away from white and go for coloured or dark coloured trainers? How much would you usually pay for mid-range trainers?

Mine will only wear joggers snd tshirts from Asda. He prefers comfort to brands thank the lord.

Prettybluepigeons · 09/08/2020 10:43

It all depends on the boy, area etc

The whole dressed in black north face thing is a bit wannabe roadman and my (admittedly older now) teen would not have gone down that road at all.

Let him just choose stuff he likes.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/08/2020 10:46

No particular colour in trainers that i noticed. Depending on his shoe size if he is in adult shoes they're expensive you can't get away with cheap trainers, teens are cruel.
Unbranded tops and joggers no problem not so much the shoes.

Prettybluepigeons · 09/08/2020 10:48

My son is 16 and we had a conversation about trainers. You can't have slazenger or lonsdale trainers because that is the sports direct marker.

He said it was like primark...everyone buys stuff from there but you don't want to shout about it

pupstersdream · 09/08/2020 10:57

I agree shoes seem to matter most and it’s not just brand also style of shoe but I’m to totally not able to predict this! White trainers are fine.

Worth saying my sporty teens wear sensible sports trainers for sport it’s the fashion ones that they care about

dementedpixie · 09/08/2020 10:58

My ds doesn't particularly care about trainers either. He goes to sports direct, tries some on and chooses whatever is comfy. His current ones are black Adidas I think

Fatted · 09/08/2020 11:00

I'd say primark and H&M are fashionable cheap places to shop. But other cheap places aren't.

JD sports is a good place to start. Every one round by us lives in North Face and Jack Wolfskin. We are in scally central though. Grin
