To wonder when (if) the price of puppies will go back down?

We've been wanting to get a Springer pup for ages but have been waiting until we move to a bigger place, which we now are.

I've looked on the KC website and there aren't currently any litters in our area, but quite a lot on pets4homes but my god the price!! Like £2-3K when we were looking at less than £1K before lockdown.

AIBU to hope that the price goes back down once things go back to normal, people start going back to work etc or is this just how much dogs cost now?!

Rescue unfortunately isnt an option for us currently although I'd like to in future.

Sadly lots of older dogs are being resold now via pets4homes and gumtree. There is a very dark side to this puppy boom. It's also encouraging a lot of unscrupulous individuals to profiteer with little regard for animal health or welfare.

There are many rescues around, including ones such as galgos del sol, that have puppies, as well as breed specific rescues.

I would love for demand to reduce to reduce the criminality in this industry (puppy farming and puppy theft on the rise) and increase animal welfare, but I don't know when or if this will happen.

Have a look on nextdoor, so many people are looking to rehome older puppies now their lives are no longer home centred.

It's funny you should mention young dogs...

Well they'll be 13 months older now.

What is the criteria you don't meet?

AfternoonToffee · 02/09/2021 07:48

Read all this before realising it was a year old thread. I wonder what it is like now. I do know though, that lots of people are still getting puppies so demand I guess is still high.

Most honest, reliable and firmly reputable breeders have not increased their prices. They also do not need to advertise as they have lists of people looking that they’ll already have met with.

Join some springer specific groups on Facebook (there is one for my breed and it’s how I found out dog) and get talking / WoM. Usually the admins / others have connections and can help you.

Get yourself along to meet ups, and shows to meet other breeders.

Avoid gumtree, pets4homes etc, that’s where the greeders live.

Lastly, just be patient you will find one that suits your family for a reasonable price, you’ll just need to be prepared to wait.

I spent 18 months trying to adopt a dog I have no small children but I have a cat and dog. No one ever calls you back. I can see why people buy puppies

Mindyourbusiness22 · 02/09/2021 07:52

@Tootsey11

I'm glad rescue centres have such strict rules and the cost of puppies are high. I'm a cleaner in other people's houses. The number of dogs and puppies were their owners tell me they are left all day on their own really really depressed me. I watched dogs pacing for hours and witnessed pups caged with no food, water or anywhere to toilet.

The number of people who get dogs then just don't bother with them, or give correct care is astounding.

There needs to be more stringent regulations on who is suitable for dog ownership.

I hope you did the right thing after providing the dogs with water and reported them.

I agree with @raspberryk, there are still breeders in the shooting world selling at reasonable prices. Most want their pups to go to friends or friends of friends, rather than Internet randoms. The prices have still risen, but they aren't as silly.

AtlasPine · 02/09/2021 07:55

Prices are much lower now going by pets4homes.

donkeymcdonkface · 02/09/2021 07:57

Prices are definitely going down. I live near a gamekeeper and their last litter prices were back to the £1000 mark.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 02/09/2021 08:01

Rescues are having a lot of pandemic puppies handed in

AtlasPine · 07/09/2021 09:55

‘Pandemic puppies’ Sad

DynamoKev · 07/09/2021 09:58

All price rises are caused by Brexit HTH

CayrolBaaaskin · 07/09/2021 10:06

People keep saying that rescue centres will be inundated but doesn’t seem to have happened yet. Also easier to adopt a child than get a rescue dog

thereisonlyoneofme · 07/09/2021 10:30

I cant understand why some people have paid £3K for a puppy during lockdown and can write of that money by dumping it in a rescue.

AtlasPine · 07/09/2021 10:32

I don’t think they they are - they are putting them on pets4homes, and trying to resell.
