Wearing masks wrong

Raindancer411 · 07/08/2020 22:50

Well it's not a AIBU but I wanted to post here for traffic... but AIBU to not understand people who wear a mask over their mouth and have their nose hanging out? Do they not realise that their nose and mouth are connected to the same way in to your lungs?

Can anyone shed any light on their thinking for me?

It’s absolutely pathetic. The signs all show really clearly that masks cover mouth and nose. I wish the police would step up and start issuing FPNs but I guess they can’t really until we sort out a proper exemption process. Nobody wants disabled people being hassled but at the same time there are clearly many people choosing not to wear one / wearing one incorrectly. I’m just back from abroad and everyone wore masks because the police are much stricter there.

Raindancer411 · 08/08/2020 08:05

Thanks all for the insights :)

@BrassyLocks

I would let my nose out if I was standing in the street far from anyone, but cover it in a shop.
Same here, although I hang it from one ear and put it back on when necessary. It goes on just before I go in a shop (covering my nose obviously) and comes off the minute I step outside.
BlueSlice · 08/08/2020 09:47

@Uzerzzz what research are you referring to?

middleager · 08/08/2020 10:02

The only masks that seem to work with my glasses are disposable ones. They are designed for men and leave gaps around my face.

Others wear them around their chin, or pull them down to chat, sneeze, cough, adjust and fiddle etc. Do people really wash the fabric ones after one use as well?

Unless you are meticulous or wear properly fitted medical masks, then it feels like we are wearing
rancid bits of cloth that merely fester germs, stuffed into pockets and bags.

BruceAndNosh · 08/08/2020 10:06

And this thread shows why we will never get out of this nightmare.
So many stupid people

JeSuisPoulet · 08/08/2020 10:20

No, it is not 100% the people's fault. The govt has relaxed guidelines to the point people think this is a non-issue. The govt hasn't told people why or how to use masks safely. Just as when seatbelts were made mandatory, people need to be shown why it is important before they change their behaviour. If this is done well they will adapt.

Please stop blaming "the people" for ALL of this.

QueenofmyPrinces · 08/08/2020 10:28

Because masks are to protect others from any coughs or sneezes you may do.....but in general if you are coughing and sneezing you don’t go to the supermarket anyway. Even if people do get a random urge to cough/sneeze whilst in the supermarket they tend to do it into the air/elbow/hands, not just into the open air.

I’m perfectly well at the moment, no coughs or sneezing so don’t really see any point to wearing a mask but I do it because I have to. I don’t think me wearing a mask or not wearing a mask makes any difference to transmission rates.

I can kind of understand the instruction of wearing them in dense, crowded areas where you are in prolonged contact with numerous people but wearing them in supermarkets is seems a bit pointless in my eyes.

People wear them because they have to, not because they actually think they make a difference. And if you don’t believe in something then you aren’t going to be too fussed about the rights and wrongs.

Irked123 · 08/08/2020 10:34

I've also seen people wearing them to enter the supermarket and then doing their shopping with it pulled down around their neck. What's the fucking point.
If they didn't have one at all I might give the benefit of the doubt and assume they are exempt. But that's just blatant selfishness!!!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/08/2020 10:42

No different to the people who do wear them but then pull them down to ask you a question. Completely fucking pointless.

They shouldn't have relaxed the 2m rule.

I’ve seen this on buses - people wear them to get on the bus and then take them off when they sit down..

EatsShootsAndRuns · 08/08/2020 10:48

You should never ”pull the mask down”. If you feel the need to expose your mouth and nose, you should unhook one ear and let it hang from the other.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/08/2020 10:50

Most people I see don't even bother with mouth, carefully draping the mask to cover the neck, or dangling over one ear - so they have a mask, presumably don't have a genuine reason for not wearing one.
I hope they all get covid and die

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/08/2020 10:54

I might use one more than once in a day if I am out and about and into/on different shops & buses, but when I get in, it goes into one of those net laundry bags for delicate washing, and chucked in the next washload.

SBAM · 08/08/2020 10:54

I saw someone on a train yesterday wearing one right up under their glasses, fully over their nose, with their mouth out Hmm

TheHighestSardine · 08/08/2020 11:15

Infected people with no symptoms are now known to have much the same viral load in the upper respiratory tract and particle spread pattern while breathing and talking as people with symptoms. So no, "not feeling unwell" is not a valid reason for not wearing a mask.

or writeup at www.nytimes.com/2020/08/06/health/coronavirus-asymptomatic-transmission.html

For those with their heads stuck firmly in the sand, yes masks do reduce infection rates. They also reduce the likelihood that someone will get a serious case, reducing fatalities.

@bingbong1970

Anyone who wears a mask is just showing how compliant and stupid they are.
People wearing a mask shows me how considerate they are of others.

This sums it up for me:

Same here when I'm at work. I have to wear one when I'm away from my desk so I use the same one and goes in the washing basket when I get home. If I used a new one every time I left my desk I'd needed about 10 a day.
ToffeePennie · 08/08/2020 11:58

My new hobby is yelling at people with their nose/mouth hanging out “oi I hope you’re going to put that mask on properly or take it off, it’s as useless as a chocolate teapot at the moment”

Yellownotblue · 09/08/2020 22:58

I had delivery people from a well known national store today, neither of them wore FMs, even though I had mine firmly on.

I just moved back to London from Asia, and frankly I am terrified by the scenes I’m seeing everywhere. Supermarkets- loads of people (mostly strapping young men and barely dressed teenagers) not wearing masks. No one on the streets wear them either.

The contrast with Hong Kong is really striking. I can’t emphasise this enough.

Masks save lives. Not wearing a mask should be the same as leaving the house without shoes on. You should wear them, covering your mouth and nose, the entire time you are out of your house. Until you come home, wash your hands, and put the mask in the bin/wash.

We are heading straight into the next wave. It’s appalling that BJ’s government has not properly explained why face masks are needed. But this doesn’t absolve personal accountability. Everyone can do their own reading, and draw their own conclusions. We are in the top 3 worst countries in the world, surely people can see we haven’t got this right?

Can’t we all show solidarity and pledge to do more than the strict minimum to save lives?

Or as seen on Twitter this week

Say yes to masks And no to bras. Free the titi But protect the city

42andcounting · 10/08/2020 12:41

I don't know if it's correct, but I read that the receptors that covid attaches itself to are much more plentiful in the nose than in the mouth or eyes. Meaning it would be better to cover the nose and uncover the mouth of you're going to half-arse it anyway! The whole thing is like Darwinism in action Confused

WendyHoused · 10/08/2020 12:56

@Yellownotblue, I think I love you.

I’ve retired my bra entirely and am fine with the masks - you get used to them and a pipe cleaner helps the fit near my glasses.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/08/2020 13:04

My mum volunteers in a charity shop, highlights this week include an old lady who thought you were meant to wear them outside not inside, lots of noses waggling free and a filthy disposable which went straight back in the pocket when he left the shop. They've been told not to challenge people in case they get thumped although that's not exactly stopping my mother. She claims she's being sensitive but it's not an attribute she's known for.
