To want to move to the Caribbean

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 22:33

totally.
I dream of living in a wooden house by the beach, with DD playing on the beach after school, DH working from home, same job, me working from home PT. Is it possible? Obviously my work and his are totally doable remotely!
Doesn't have to be Caribbean just somewhere relaxed and warm. I miss the sea since we moved inland.
Talk me out of this dream please! Its probably lockdown fever...

Well we are an island, you don't have to go so far for the sea! And apparently it's warmer here this week than the Caribbean!

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 22:42

You're right... but skeggie doesn't quite have the same appeal!

OP posts:
TheFuckingDogs · 07/08/2020 22:45

Do it!

Hellohah · 07/08/2020 22:46

I am sure I read that Barbados are giving year long visas for people wanting to work from home there 👍

@Hellohah

That is correct.
weepingwillow22 · 07/08/2020 22:49

Barbados has launched a 1 year work remotely visa which does sound appealing www.insider.com/work-remote-live-caribbean-barbados-new-visa-2020-7

On the other hand there is hurricane season to put up with.

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 22:49

@Hellohah OK If you're joking you are a very very mean person!

OP posts:
Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 22:51

Oh my funking lord... you're not joking. Now this is no longer a 3 glass of wine dream... its a research project. Thank you!!

OP posts:
Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 22:51

oh funk. I meant fucking

OP posts:
Aragog · 07/08/2020 22:52

It's not a joke. They really are encouraging people to go

cherry2727 · 07/08/2020 22:57

Op, dh and I are contemplating the same move . I may be able to work remotely and dh is a trades man so should be able to find work there . It's an easier life and quite relaxed . I just want to live close to the beach and have a peaceful life . The community feeling is very strong and makes you feel quite safe and happy. Go for it!!!

Leaannb · 07/08/2020 23:00

Do you really want to live and deal with hurricanes and massive flooding destroying property and infrastructure every year? That's what happens in the Carribean

Helpimfalling · 07/08/2020 23:00

@Thisisnotataste

oh funk. I meant fucking
I preferred funking it was much less blasphemous ffs 🤣🤣
namechangeforthisone1212 · 07/08/2020 23:06

Name changed for this as possibly outing but I did this for a few years. Monday to Friday term time is pretty much like living anywhere with DC's school routine and errands to run. Most weekends were like being on a fabulous holiday, lots of boating and socialising. We went out far more than we ever did in the UK.

Weather was great all year round apart from the hurricanes so you might want to rethink living in a wooden house and look for something a bit more stormproof 😉

Literallyfedup · 07/08/2020 23:12

I have lived in Tobago for 2 years, it's beautiful and weather is marvelous. I would love to go on holiday there but if I have to live there again then I would pass.
First the medical is not good, there are hospitals but nothing like UK. In day to day life you will struggle to find things (grocery, vegetables, clothes). If you are vegetarian then you would struggle to find a restaurant.
But it's clean, much cleaner than UK but also crowded with tourist.

newnamejustforthis20 · 07/08/2020 23:14

Isn’t it quite violent?

TableFlowerss · 07/08/2020 23:20

Pack me in your suitcase- it sounds like bliss

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 23:28

Ok. Sober project for the weekend. See if this is really viable. I am probably having an early mid life crisis but @cherry2727 and especially @namechangeforthisone1212 I am really fired up now!
The visa at least for Barbados looks like its for 1 year. So worth a punt just for a year. Right? A quick scan of house rental prices we can afford much nicer that what we have if we rent out our house. But we have DD starting school this year. Its only reception... she'll be fine...
I think I can live with hurricanes but yes... OK not a wooden house! Grin

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 23:29

I promise to do good research and choose the best place...
Step one.. what's the best place? Grin

BIWI · 07/08/2020 23:31

You're much less likely to suffer from hurricanes in Barbados than the rest of the Caribbean islands, as they're so much further to the East.

EmmiJay · 07/08/2020 23:36

Its as violent as any other place in the world🙄 @ that person above.

As long as the place your staying in is made of brick you'll be fine through all seasons lol. I've been to Grenada through every season for yrs, seen it all. Great food, lovely people and providing you have all the funds its heaven on earth🙂

eatsleepread · 07/08/2020 23:49

Barbados was on Place in the Sun today Grin It was gorgeous, and the accent is wonderful.
The couple who were house-hunting wanted to live in a gated community. This made me think a lot. I wondered what the locals must think of these compounds completely made up of white people HmmConfused And if the crime is bad enough to warrant living in one.
Anyway, my hormonal 14 year old daughter is now desperate to live there, and flounced out the room upon realising that you could pretty much get a mansion for what we paid for our flat Grin
Hope you can make your dream a reality OP, and please do keep us updated!

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 23:54

So we're not rich but comfortable. We don't live in London! We're not in a position to go to the Caribbean on luxury holidays each year ever!
We have decent salaries and like I say we both work from home now. Dd would need school and we'd need either nursery or nanny.
Are state schools OK? They don't need to be amazing academically- just for reception year. just safe and friendly.

I've lived in South America and travelled in SE Asia before (as an adult) I'm not worried about an average (global) level of safety. But e.g. I wouldn't move to Jamiaca probably! . I don't know much about hurricane season but I think I would be OK with 3 months of rain and wind.
What am I missing?

OP posts:
UmmH · 07/08/2020 23:56

There hasn't been a bad hurricane in Barbados for 10 years.

Thisisnotataste · 07/08/2020 23:56

@eatsleepread I hope I can!
I told DH we should just now and he just said "OK. Sort it out " which is more or less the same response I would get if I said we should go to the beach tomorrow. I don't think he knows I'm really serious now.
