I had an eye test last week and the optician said there was only a very slight change in my reading prescription. I’d already had my glasses repaired and had had them over two years so thought I’d treat myself to some new frames. I asked therefore, that I might as well have my “slight change” lenses put in, since they’re new. “Oh, no” said the optician, “it’s so small it’s barely worth change”. So, I was talked into having the special coating for tablet/iPad use. I’ve had it before.

I collected them today. I cannot for the life of me work out what the problem is.

When using my iPad, it’s like the screen is concave (like a curved TV). The icons are kind of 3D or like little Magic Eyes (🤷🏻‍♀️) in other words, they have depth.

I’m sat now, reading my book. Same thing. The paperback cover looks curved.

What’s going on? Anyone can help?

The whole thing has left a horrible feeling around it.

Wish I could afford the posh opticians in town and their designer frames. Being furloughed is no fun.

So in fact it was a slight error in the fitting and nothing to do with the optician. I'm not getting why you behaved like that and what you hoped to achieve other than making a show of yourself in public.

EarringsandLipstick · 08/08/2020 18:53

OP you behaved very badly there.

I think too, you're being unfair about the optician & sign-off. She was qualified but newly so & sign-off is appropriate, like it is in many clinical settings.

I think you've possibly got confused about the lenses too.

rainkeepsfallingdown · 08/08/2020 19:07

I don't really understand what the problem was, or how it was fixed, from your posts. But perhaps that's the real problem: they didn't communicate well to you.

Specsavers operate as a series of franchises. Some are excellent, some are shit. Service also varies hugely at each branch depending on whether you have glasses or contacts needs.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 08/08/2020 19:26

I think it’s not unreasonable to assume that the person performing a procedure is fully qualified and not needing any supervision. We all have to learn and recently at a hospital appointment I was asked whether I objected to being examined by a medical student. It was fine by me. When the test was finished DH was at the door (outside) and said “that was quick!” I felt the eye test was rushed and haphazard.

I will apologise to the woman I lost my temper with but the service and confusion caused was not good.

And, when you’re buying glasses, you do need to try them on before you leave. Social distancing is causing havoc all over the high street but I think if I was just collecting an order such as clothing, having it handed over at the door is fine. When it’s your eyesight, you need a better service.

Specsavers have usually been good for me, but last summer they made me a pair of prescription sunglasses that gave me double vision. I’m a -3 and my dad who’s a -5 thought they were ok. They accepted they were wrong when I took them back and apologised, but that’s a bit shit when it took two extra trips and I was about a month extra without them in the height of summer.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/08/2020 19:41

I agree they need to be tried on instore. I put my doubts about the ropey sunglasses down to them being polarised and something I’d get used to.

I've had this in the past too. Always go to Soecsavers and only once was there a problem. I put them on in the shop and said they didn't feel right, the person serving me said I might need to get used to them. I'd bought two pairs at once and one was fine, the other made me feel really disoriented, the perspective seemed wrong. I stood my ground and when she took them to a colleague they said they'd been made with the centre of my field of vision in the wrong place. They just re made them and I picked up a replacement a week later. Just go back and say they're not right. Specsavers are great with returns.

Whoops! Should have read the full thread.

TroysMammy · 08/08/2020 20:22

OP I have this problem too when looking at a tablecloth I have, some computer screens and my crafting mat! I had my eyes retested and the glasses checked and they were fine, apparently. I make cards and I struggle to correctly position layers on them, they sometimes look wonky.

My optician is a local independent. The only thing it could be is the shape of the frames and ultimately the lenses which cause the problem. The ones I have are more rounded than the smaller rectangular frames I had before.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 08/08/2020 20:47

@helpfulperson you’re right, I did not behave well. I think had she asked me what the difficulty was without just taking the glasses away, leaving me at the door with a number of tutting people behind me (as we were stood there for some time) I might not have been so antagonistic.

Also, her saying, “you’ll get used to them” made me think I’d be better off with a refund because it was like reading in 3D with the colour red bouncing off the screen at me. Had she asked me what was wrong with them and given me the chance to explain, I’d at least have felt “heard”. The woman behind me kept saying “this is ridiculous” (the queuing) and it was.

I would probably phone and apologise but I think you have had very poor service
I go to a small optician, always see the main man and the service is excellent
You get what you pay for I suppose

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 09/08/2020 08:56

Poor service definitely. Unacceptable reaction from me, yes.

Years ago, where I was financially able, I went to a small independent optician. Never felt rushed and any little tweaks and adjustments were done happily. The lady was very thorough. I agree @user1487194234, it’s impossible to expect that kind of service from a huge chain. I spent £200. Not the cheapest glasses and they were not “fitted” due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, standing essentially in the street trying to sort out a problem with brand new glasses was very poor service.

I’ve read the thread btw.

I had this years ago with Boots. My glasses were terrible, really distorted but when I queried it I was told I just had to get used to them. Well I never did get used to them, the problem remained so I just never wore them so it was a waste of money really. I go to specsavers now and I have to say I’ve never had a problem. They spotted a potential problem which they investigated and I have new glasses which are not distorted in the slightest and I happily wear them. It does make me wonder from reading this thread that maybe Boots didn’t make them correctly and I should have pushed the issue.

cakewench · 09/08/2020 10:49

OP definitely either go and apologise or ring up and apologise. I still remember the woman who did 20 years ago at my first job at an opticians! People almost never apologise and it will make all the difference.

I’m glad you got it sorted. Agree that high street chains aren’t great, but they are so much cheaper than the specialty options. Unfortunately.

GreenCat44 · 09/08/2020 11:39

Being told you'll get used to them by opticians is very annoying. Especially if you've been wearing glasses for years and can tell the difference between a new prescription and an actual problem Hmm
I had new glasses once that I could see through perfectly if I turned them backwards and upside down Grin

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 09/08/2020 15:09

@GreenCat44 😂

@cakewench yes, I will go in person and apologise.

I would never have gotten used to the glasses. They did such odd things to my eyes. Like the snake in The Jungle Book
