To think cake doesn't belong in the fridge?

Honestly, this drives me up the wall. If you put cake in the fridge, it goes stale and hard and sometimes takes on that weird fridge flavour.

Cakes don't belong in the fridge unless they have cream or similar on them which has to be refrigerated. Yet the moment my back is turned, some fucker always moves it into the cold and by the time I notice it's ruined!

Cake belongs in my stomach.
QED.

YANBU, cake dries out in the fridge! Unless it's a cream cake or a cheesecake then it belongs in the cupboard.

MinnieJackson · 07/08/2020 14:20

Lemon drizzle etc cupboard.
Carrot cake with cream cheese icing in my Belly fridge

MinnieJackson · 07/08/2020 14:21

I also know the fridge taste Angry

Cassilis · 07/08/2020 14:22

I'm gone gluten free due to intense post-gluten bloating. I miss cake, frigid or not.

Poppyismyfavourite · 07/08/2020 14:25

Depends entirely on the cake!
Squishy cake / involving dairy - yes
sponge types - no

The80sweregreat · 07/08/2020 14:25

I put cakes in the fridge! ..
This will go the way of ' do you put mayo/ ketchup / brown sauce in the fridge ( I do !)
😀

Cake only belongsin the fridge to preserve a spoilable icing in hot weather. (And I believe during the crumb coating process for buttercream).

I remember this problem when living in the Mediterranean... Jaffa cakes (as in the bought version) went weird in the fridge but melted in the cupboard!

JBizz · 07/08/2020 14:29

Depends on the cake

Anything with cream, cheese or fruits in it should be kept in the fridge

Anything else can be left out but covered

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 07/08/2020 14:30

I love fridge cake - the butter icing or ganache goes all solid and buttery rather than soft and greasy. Much better in my book. It doesn’t last long enough to dry out, so not a problem there. And I’d cover it with cling film or put it in a box so it doesn’t taste fridgey

The solution is a Jaffridge - a fridge set to a coolish but cold temp to keep Jaffas in optimal condition.

Mmmmm. Cake......

Yes, agree with you.

In an airtight tin unless fresh cream involved.

I am diabetic so shouldn't eat cake but I made an apple and blackberry cake with wholewheat flour from a diabetic recipe and it was absolutely delicious.

This week I'm making an apple and cinnamon loaf.

Snorlax86 · 07/08/2020 15:02

All I can think about now is wanting cake!

MinnieJackson · 07/08/2020 15:05

@The80sweregreat oh no! Not that age old dilema! Mayo in fridge, ketchup and brown in cupboard Grin

ZolaGrey · 07/08/2020 15:08

It depends entirely on what kind of cake it is.

GF flour and xanthan gum - it's not exactly the same but some cakes work brilliantly!

Cake should be room temperature!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 07/08/2020 15:38

minniejackson l am 100% with you on that arrangement with sauces!!

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 07/08/2020 15:48

@Cassilis I can recommend nigella's chocolate olive oil cake which is easy and delicious, and gluten free - made with almond flour. You don't have to be cake free! I do keep this one in the fridge in summer as it's quite soft and I am afraid it might turn to a pile of mush when it's 28 degrees in my kitchen. I make my own gluten free flour mix for other recipes as commercial GF flour usually contains a lot of rice flour, which gives a gritty texture. A good mix for cakes is a blend of half GF oat flour and a quarter each buckwheat flour and potato starch, plus a pinch of Xanthen gum and however much baking powder is needed to turn plain flour into SR.

Sorry have gone OT there - normal cake does not belong in the fridge!

Picklypickles · 07/08/2020 15:51

YANBU, unfortunately my house is really fucking hot so I sometimes do have to put cakes in the fridge for a while if they have buttercream in them or it all starts to melt and the top of the cake starts sliding off! I always take it out for a while before eating though, I can't stand cold/hard buttercream and cold sponge!

AlwaysLatte · 07/08/2020 15:53

It does if it has fresh cream or buttercream, especially in this weather. Unless you can eat it all in one go!

Cassilis · 07/08/2020 16:02

@ViveLEntenteCordiale wow thanks so much! I’ve screen shotted your post and will look up the olive oil cake recipe!

MintCassis · 07/08/2020 16:03

DP puts Madeira cake and chocolate muffins in the fridge 😒 They go hard and crumbly. Sponge based cakes should definitely be kept at room temperature!

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 07/08/2020 16:05

DP does this and it gives me intense rage.
I am 6 months pregnant stop fucking about with my cake and bloody ruining it.
DSD brought round some buns that her and her mum had made, her mum is a FAB baker and I was so looking forward to eating one, but no, fuckhead DP put it in the fridge. I was raging.

OooErrThor · 07/08/2020 16:06

We always put cake on a cake stand in the microwave, as 'a holding area' for the two hours max it lasts before it gets eaten Wink

user1493413286 · 07/08/2020 16:08

I agree; My DH did this and I couldn’t get my head round it
