AIBU to wonder WTF this beast is?

OK, it's clearly a cat, but do any MNetters what what sort?

Our garden backs onto some woods and this beast just chased next door's juvenile cat over the fence (from the woods) and across my garden. Poor cat was terrified, absolutely running for its life and ran into my house for shelter.

I was outside at the time, shouted at the beast and told it to fuck off (as you do!) and the thing bared it's teeth at me and hissed! WTF is it and why is it so angry?!

Norwegian forest cat. It doesn't look like a Maine coone

Ernieshere · 07/08/2020 15:27

Oh I hope it feels safe soon & gets home Sad

huuunderickssss · 07/08/2020 15:31

Maine coon

cosmo30 · 07/08/2020 15:38

Look at the size of that tail! Gorgeous cat. I agree with Norwegian forest cat

Cam2020 · 07/08/2020 15:39

I thought it looked like a Maine Coon but that the temprement didn't match!Still they're all individuals!

It looks expensive and very beautiful (although bloody scary!); I did think house cat when I went in to tell my rather bemused DP what had happened.

It was very angry. Sloped off though now so too late to try and catch it. I'll put the pic up on our neighbourhood FB page though, in case anyone is concerned for its whereabouts!

Thanks for the advice and knowledge!

A friend has two Maine coons and they are free to wander, not everyone keeps them inside so maybe it's just visiting.

Picklypickles · 07/08/2020 15:55

Why did you shout at it you big meanie?!

LordGribeau · 07/08/2020 15:58

It looks like a Maine Coon. I have a half Maine Coon. He's, big, fluffy with a massive tail. He's extremely good natured and gentle though, as is typical for the breed. They're known as gentle giants.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 07/08/2020 16:00

Hes very well cared for, someone has to brush that coat every day. Hes also frightened. Likely an indoor cat who has escaped and isnt coping very well.

LordGribeau · 07/08/2020 16:01

My fluffy baby 😻

I've always had long haired moggies
and I've never brushed their tails

  • that is what tongues are for
Cam2020 · 07/08/2020 16:19

@Picklypickles it was about to murder next door's cat Blush

Poor little thing has never run so fast with that brute in hot pursuit!

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 07/08/2020 16:24

Yep - a Maine Coon.

Cam2020 · 07/08/2020 16:24

I'd have said rag doll, not the right face for maine coon.

phatsandsmall · 07/08/2020 16:27

Not sure i would put a pic of it up on fb you may make it a target for thieves 🤨

Intelinside57 · 07/08/2020 16:28

"I'd put some food and water out for him, he could be lost." Bloody hell don't do that. That's how people end up losing their cats to well-meaning neighbours. If this cat chases your neighbour's cat the last thing you need to do is encourage it.

Intelinside57 · 07/08/2020 16:29

If you want to do something to find out where it comes from maybe post the photo you took on local FB groups? Someone will know it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/08/2020 16:34

Suggest you post this on the 'litter tray' section.

Whatever it is it's quite magnificent Grin

Nottherealslimshady · 07/08/2020 16:38

Oh its beautiful! Must be in a fowl mood in this weather

MotherofKitties · 07/08/2020 16:43

Maine Coon.

Poor thing must be sweltering in this heat.

Ernieshere · 07/08/2020 19:53

I think there is a site called Petslost or similar, you could post on there.

I would ring round the local vets as well?

And I would put some water out somewhere.

I wouldnt put a photo on F.B.

rubydoobydoo · 07/08/2020 19:58

Looks like a Maine Coon to me too - we've got one but she isn't angry - she's friendly, a bit stupid, and usually upside down.

viques · 07/08/2020 20:03

Bit late now as they will be shut but it's an unusual breed so local vets would probably recognise the cat from your description, or even from the picture if you sent it to them.
