To wonder if anyone else was banned from teenage magazines

Completely random. But did anyone else’s mum ban them from reading certain magazines as a teenager? I wasn’t allowed to read More, just17, cosmopolitan or Marie Claire. In fairness the reason I wasn’t allowed Marie Claire was that I read an article about FGM when I was 10 and then got home and was a bit hysterical that this was in store for me. My mum had no idea that FGM was a thing until then.

I was only allowed to read shout, smash hits, the NME and melody maker.

Yabu: they weren’t banned in my family
Yanb: yes, they were banned in mine

I've just started buying my 10yo Shout. I grew up with magazines and got all my sex and relationships information from them. It's such a shame a lot of them are no longer. It went Mizz / J17 / More / New Woman / Marie Claire as ingot older. I absolutely loved them.

I forgot Cosmopolitan which I think came after More and before New Woman.

Yep. I once bought "Sugar" - a gentle little mag aimed at 9-10 year olds - and I still got in loads of trouble when it was discovered like an illicit Playboy.

Little period talk, no sex talk at all. That was really useful when friends at school were groomed by older men - teachers, sports coaches, other students' fathers - and we didn't have the language to describe what was happening or the fear they felt. One girl began skipping school, another was cutting, but the teachers just deemed them naughty and "making up stories" about 'boyfriends'.

Talk to your kids, folks.

Yes! I bought Just 17 and my mum forced me to return it to the shop!
