Not getting the hair you want in a hairdressers?

Hi, not really sure where to post but 4am can’t sleep as I’m quite upset over my hair.

So I’ve been growing my hair out mostly since October. It was patchy colour and in need of a cut. I had my daughter three months ago so don’t exactly have loads of money (maternity pay is stupid) but I saved up to go to a hair salon as I wanted a change. I want a balayage. Brown to like an ash blonde. This woman used to teach hairdressing so assumed she knew what she was doing.

I’ve come out with just a head of highlights. She used Foils but I assumed she knew what she was doing and didn’t question it. The hair between has been dyed darker and I’ve got white streaks in my hair.

I said I’ll try and get used to it and well it’s four am and I hate my hair. I feel like a 40 year old in the 90s. I’m 23 and feel like it’s aged me.

I don’t have another £150 to go somewhere to get it fixed. I literally spent all my money on my hair and can’t stand it. It’s not even long enough to wear up everyday until I can afford it.

I just want to throw a box dye over it but my hair doesn’t hold box dyes so will need to dye it every three weeks or so which will just ruin it.

Have you ever complained? What do I do?

Yes my hair means a lot to me

I can't pm you OP .. can you pm me . ? Thanks

Yeahnahmum · 07/08/2020 14:31

Demand your hair fixed or a refund. Be brave . Nothing worse than having hair that you dispise.

GoshHashana · 07/08/2020 14:35

Have hairdressers forgotten how to do their job during lockdown? So many posts like this one.

JBizz · 07/08/2020 14:37

Did you not complain? I have many times had to not leave the hairdressers until they fixed their errors

It happens a lot though, doesn't help that women's hair cuts are expensive so there is that higher expectation for the end result at the beginning

I was just thinking about this very topic! I asked for light blonde to caramel balyage last week and came out with bleach blonde chunks on my hair Hmm I really dont like it, but i dont know if it is too late to ask for a correction etc.

I dont mean to sound churlish but every time I show a hairdresser a photo of what I want, the usually say something along the lines of 'well it will take a few sessions, it won't be achievable today' then they make a really half arsed effort so it doesnt look remotely like what you wanted. Part of me thinks they just cant be bothered to take the time to do subtle, good dye jobs because they will take longer, so they just do a rough approximation.

Btw my hair is really good for styling/dying, it is shoulder length, average thickness, really strong & naturally a dark blonde. So I dont believe that whatever I asked for isnt possible.

Sorry just wanted to have my own moan!

I wonder if perhaps it's not that hairdressers are going shit, it's that women are actually finally seeing the light and realising their being ripped off by hair dressers? As someone with curly hair I've had my share of prelock down hair disasters from hairdressers who refuse to listen to me about how my hair is maintained. I've even been to one where one couldn't even manage a half decent blow dry!

There are women out there who are literally thousands of pounds better off without their usual salon treatments realising they don't look any worse without them. I also think that for lots of people, they suddenly don't have the money for luxuries like this, like the OP and are no longer prepared to waste it on a piss poor service.

Wolfgirrl · 07/08/2020 14:58

That's what I asked for & that's what I got. £150....

I would complain!! Tbh I haven't complained and regretted....

The last 5 years I got a triangle (no exaggeration) and a mullet Confused I kind of complained about the mullet but the woman was impossibly stupid Hmm should have talked to the salon owner.

middleager · 07/08/2020 15:07

That's a massive colour difference! No wonder you're hacked off.

My hairdresser cocked my dye up and it's so dark and ageing. It's awkward as I always go there, the price is good, but even before lockdown she never got it right.

I am lucky that a relative will dye mine from now on. Have given up on highlights due to cost and the fact after a week it merges into one gingery mess.

Wolfgirrl · 07/08/2020 15:52

I actually contacted them after I posted those photos and theyve offered to do a colour correction free of charge!

ravensoaponarope · 08/08/2020 09:19

@Wolfgirrl, excellent result!

Delizhop · 08/08/2020 12:30

Update. I messaged her asking for more blonde as it’s not what I wanted and she can’t get me in for over three weeks.

I honestly can’t stand my hair and I’m just going to box dye over it and wait a few months and go somewhere else. The layers are shorter than I wanted and I’m just not happy at all so just going to go dark and wait a few months.

Lesson learnt unfortunately

@Wolfgirrl glad they will fix it! Prefer yours over mine right now 😂 dark hair with bleached streaks nothing like I wanted so have no choice to go all the way dark again. Hope it turns out well!

Be careful putting a box die over that much blonde. You run the risk of it going green.

Ccccchanges · 08/08/2020 13:29

Unfortunately I think some stylists struggle with the concept of balyage....

When I went to my previous hairdresser and asked for one, she charged me £170 to dye the hair nearest my head really dark brown and bleach the rest of it so it was white blonde. I was really hacked off, especially as the regrowth left my hair with an awful orangy ring where she’d put the dark dye in.

Luckily I found my current hairdresser who is fantastic at balyage and highlights! My first trip there I ended up slightly blonder than expected as she had to put lots of highlights in to undo the damage from the previous hairdresser (however she did explain this!)

Next few trips she has root smudged and now I have a lovely balyage look!

If anyone is in North London and needs a hairdresser PM me for her Instagram page and details!

Hairthrowaway · 08/08/2020 13:46

I hope she offers you a refund (even partially) if she doesn’t redo it.

I don’t think waiting 3 weeks is that bad, as life still hasn’t returned to normal yet so you could probably get away with leaving it without many people seeing you. Hide the weird blonde bits by using a brown L’Oréal root spray on them?

But fair enough if you don’t want to bleach your hair again or go back to her - I would still request a refund.

kimmyst · 09/08/2020 11:26

Please don't box dye it! I would wait for her to fit you in, I know you really don't like it but not a lot of people will see it, pull it off your face with sunglasses, or put half of it up off your face. I'm not sure I'd believe the 3 week wait though, I would ask to be first in line for a cancelllation!

Kjled · 09/08/2020 15:55

I realise it’s too late but my advice would be if you try again look at a salons Instagram page etc before you book. I have balyage it’s fine the salon I go to had loads of pics on social media plus they have a balyage specialist.

goose1964 · 09/08/2020 16:02

To me bayalage always looks like the colour is being grown out so in 3 weeks you will start getting it.
