Have lived here with my children nearly a decade. The only home they remember. Got served section 21. Landlord wants to sell. Our home is not ours just like that. Although have three months to get out. Just feel sad. AIBU to think this is a shitty thing to do to families at this time. Just can't help but to feel sad and then angry although I know it was never our house it was our home. So maybe IABU.
So yabu is get over yourself it's your landlords house
Yanbu it was your home for a decade it's okay to be sad.

Just a couple of ideas.
Ask the landlord if you can stay until exchange as having difficulty finding somewhere. You have a good record with them so they may accomodate - from STC it'll still take 8 weeks and this could be valuable time.
Ask for reference of good payment in advance so you can view and then provide reference before all the other stuff - landlord will be more willing to negotiate.
Look at slightly more run down properties - if I'd just put down new flooring throughout dogs would be a no but if the carpets / floor were 5 years old it would be fine.
Do not 'wait for baliffs'
Widen the search to private landlords who advertise on Gumtree etc
Be prepared to offer extra per month to counter prospective damage.
Be willing to sign up for longer contract - 2 years definite rent counters possible damage.
Widen search area.
You will find somewhere and I'm sorry it's so distressing.
Xx

Thanks everyone for the kind responses. I will look into it more today and thanks for the suggestions. I'm sorry for everyone that has been through this too. Feels so strange still.

You do not have to leave when the section 21 expires - that's simply when the landlord can begin the court eviction process, which with the current backlog will take approximately forever.
Now that would be a shitty thing to do to a LL. You don't know the circumstances behind the LL selling. Why would you want to land them with court costs? If the OP has stayed there for 10 years it can't be a bad place to live and the LL kindly let them keep pets there.

@ThePants999

Please bear in mind that if you want/need it, you have a lot more than three months to leave. You do not have to leave when the section 21 expires - that's simply when the landlord can begin the court eviction process, which with the current backlog will take approximately forever.
This is terrible advice. Don't be that person OP. I understand you feeling sad, that's perfectly understandable.

YABU.

MumsyMumIAmNot · 08/08/2020 00:05

Don't stay after the 3 months it's some poor persons house they need the money.

Patch23042 · 08/08/2020 00:21

Is it likely to be sold to another investor? They may be happy with a reliable tenant.

Sorry you’re going through this.

Wfhwith3yearold · 08/08/2020 03:55

Just to add to what people are saying about not leaving after 3 months, if the landlord goes to court to evict you then you could potentially be due to pay a shot ton in fees that the landlord will be entitled to pursue you for.

This is an absolute last resort only.

If you need help/ advice please contact shelter and ignore stupid advice!

Whatever you do, move out and do NOT wait until the bailiffs come. Someone I know was given this piece of gold nugget advice by someone in LA, and the landlord took them to court over lost income and they had to pay him £5000 plus court costs, which was very expensive. You don't want to do that.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 08/08/2020 04:14

@Fatted sorry to hear about this, but maybe she did plan to stay but changed her mind, she did not really owe you an explanation. Maybe she decided to sell up and move elsewhere while staying there for a bit?

OP must stay till the bailiffs come if she should require Council housing.

It's not poor advice.

Take it up with the government.

YANBU to feel sad that your home is going up for sale and you will have to move. However, YABU for saying it’s a shitty thing to do as I’m assuming you don’t know the landlords circumstances. I’ve had one landlord be diagnosed with cancer and die and 5 year later my new landlord suddenly became ill with a life limiting illness.

brushandmop · 08/08/2020 06:19

You should make sure the LL puts on the advert that there is a reliable tenant willing to stay. Good luck.
