AIBU? OK, maybe I just want to vent ... we have been renting a very nice house in London for the past 4 years. Great relationship with the owners who live abroad and we've cared for the house well. We've just bought our own home so have moved out (gave the owner lots of warning, all very amicable). The owner's parents have 'managed' the house which basically means they have been on call for the past 4 years -- but except for 1-2 calls when we first moved in, we've never needed them. We gave 2 months' notice as agreed and this week moved into our own home on Tuesday. I paid dearly for an end of tenancy cleaning, carpets, windows, etc (~£900) with a guarantee so we wouldn't have to worry about anything. Cleaning was done yesterday and check out with inventory company was scheduled for today. (We still officially are paying rent through the end of the month).
My husband showed up to meet the check out company guy today to return keys and the parents were power washing the garden and walking all over the freshly cleaned carpets!!! Then the mother had the nerve to tell my husband the toilet wasn't as clean as she liked when she used it! They did not ask permission to enter the property today but knew that we had moved out -- so they just let themselves in and started working. The cleaning company offers a 72 hour guarantee as long as no one enters the property between cleaning completion and check out. I paid extra for that guarantee because I didn't want to have petty cleaning charges on the check out. UGH! When my husband arrived today, the mother was super rude to him and said he wasn't supposed to be there. We are still paying rent and have not turned over the keys!!!
I understand the house was vacant so maybe they didnt think they needed to ask permission? but when they entered the house and walked on the carpets and used the bathrooms, they invalidated the cleaning guarantee.
If they are doing work on the house, what is our responsibility if they do something stupid and break a water pipe or cause an electric fire or stain the carpets?
