To want to gag a child

I don’t mind the sound of children playing, calling out, laughing but dear god we have a girl near us who’s default setting is banshee screaming. She screams as if she’s in danger constantly. Right now she’s outside screaming at the top of her lungs over and over, it’s been going on for 6 minutes. I had a look and she’d not being chased she just standing at the side of the road screaming. I mean actual hurt your throat proper screaming not just shrieks of playfulness. She screams when running, walking, riding her bike...i remember my mum bringing us inside if we did anything like that.

The other kids aren’t doing this.

I’m trying to work, WIBU to outside and sling a gag on her. I can’t wear headphones as it gives me a headache and I have to be available for calls.

Thank god Scottish Schools opens next week!

I thought I was unlucky with the screaming kid next door. It is bloodcurdling screams your fillings nearly drop out. he is nearly 4 if I didn’t know I would assume the mother is torturing him she is not as she is always indoors and he is left to his own devices the older brother plays and is nowhere near him and the kid screams at everything. I love hearing kids play but not this one It is very hard to warm to him. He seems so unhappy.

@WorraLiberty

YANBU

I'd go outside and politely ask her to keep it down but then I'm old fashioned like that.

I expect half of Mumsnet will need smelling salts having read that ^^

Smelling salts, thanks , after an exhausting day that raised a smirk from me 😂😂

The worst ever was adult neighbours - constant din that escalated to them getting a sodding karaoke machine that they used day and night. I snapped at that point I have to say.

That and they seemed to live off boiled fish and liver 🤢

I actually had the same idea yesterday. Neighbours daughter had a friend over and must have decided to have a screaming contest. They just stood there screaming, right next to my house. For 2 small girls they had screams that would break glass. Usually the noise of kids playing outside doesn't bother me but this was at another level. My head was pounding and her mother was outside with her but didn't stop her. It was the longest 2 hours ever.

Strokethefurrywall · 06/08/2020 22:55

Ooooh yes definitely get an air horn and water gun, and blast them at the screaming, feral shitbags alternately.

If one doesn't work, the other one will! Fucking genius!

There's a kid like this on our street. He's 7, he literally runs and rides around screeching. I've seen him literally walk out of his front door and scream - nobody around nothing to make him scream. Nothing we can do about it and just hope he's nearly grown out of it.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/08/2020 23:10

The girl next door but one doesn’t scream but she fake cries all the time.
I think screaming is worse though, even though she does drive me to distraction.

Notredamn · 06/08/2020 23:36

I'd knock on the door and tell her parent 'I'm concerned about your kid, she's in the street absolutely screaming, is she ok? I've never heard anything like it'
I really would.

Midsommar · 06/08/2020 23:43

We have a little boy down our street who sounds like a dinosaur. He roars....like really loud. All day.

5foot5 · 07/08/2020 00:02

How old is she?

I mean, if she is not actually a toddler, if she is of an age to be at school, I see no reason why you shouldn't just go out and say "Would you mind not making that terrible noise. It is really very annoying' Perhaps the shock of being spoken to by an adult who is neither a family member or a teacher might have an affect?

Failing that you could scream at her to STFU. (Joking!)

anxietyaunt · 07/08/2020 04:27

I know the scream well. It’s so strange. Why do they do it?! I was a wee girl once and never screamed like that. Mind you, my mother would have belted me if I did. Don’t have a solution for you, OP. It’s one of those mysterious behaviours no one understands. My condolences.

Ohffs66 · 07/08/2020 07:05

We have 2 screamers from the same family a few doors down. They seem to spend all day on their trampoline screaming. Luckily we are just far enough away that it's not hideously loud, but I can still hear it with all the windows shut. The neighbour closest to them told me she can't actually use her garden while they are out there it's that bad. She's mentioned it to the mother who just shrugged and said they are just having fun. However this is the same woman who looked totally perplexed when I asked her to stop her children riding their bikes on our drive and walking over our garden / up our front path and responded 'but they like to do that'. Some people are just incredibly indulgent of their feral brats and expect everyone else to do the same.

I’m never surprised by the behaviour of some children that the parents just allow and even encourage. I watched a family (2 parents, 3 kids) stand in the doorway if a shop (it was raining and we were all waiting it out) and scoff down a large pack of individually wrapped cake bars and drop every single wrapper on the floor. Dad then scrunched you the bag and dropped it. They were 3 feet away from a bloody bin!

Just resurrecting this to add that a neighbour of my screamer has just come out of his house and told her to stop. Amazingly, she has for now.
