Renting

AIBU to be a little disheartened about trying to rent a property.

I have 2 children and 2 dogs and would like to move to the coast.

I work full time and would need to WFH rather than be office based. I am a Loss Adjuster so a professional.

It seems that the majority of properties won't allow pets or just want a professional couple as tenants.

I am looking at 3/4 bed houses that look like family places. I don't think my set up is too unusual.......

YANBU renting is an absolute nightmare, and the demands that landlords can make of prospective tenants is scandalous. As Generation Rent become adults with kids and pets, something is going to have to change. It is enraging. I'm sorry, OP. No advice but plenty of sympathy, I hope you find somewhere soon.

With regard to pets most landlord insurance policies exclude damage done by pets. Also if leasehold property, the head lease says no pets so again the landlord can not accept pets.

If either of these do not apply could you offer an enhanced deposit to cover additional cleaning on exit? Otherwise you sadly need to decide which is more important - home or pets?

We had to go and live with my mum for a year in between rentals as we have a dog and nobody would rent to us, it was soul destroying. We found a rental that no one else wanted and they'd have the dog, we've now been here 3 years and have been told it's ours as long as we want it

*for as long as we want it

I've never seen 'professional couple' specified anywhere. I can't imagine that being a 'professional' woman without a partner makes any difference. I think what they are implying (right or wrong) is they want someone who is working with a steady salaried income, which I assume you have. However, I do think it's quite tricky to rent with dogs (we have no dogs and everywhere we've ever rented specified no dogs). But there are definitely places out there that will take dogs, they just may not be as nice as what you are looking for. I know we looked at a few houses where the current tenants had dogs, and frankly, they were disgusting. Smelled of wee and wet dog and lots of damage done (we said, no thanks!). I can understand how a landlord wouldn't want to have to sort that out every time tenants move on.

Ive been looking to move recently.
I have a pet and i claim Universal Credit.

There's a thing now where they can't charge excessive fees or list 'no DSS'
I've found agents that are working around it be insisting on half deposit is paid upfront to hold property before a viewing.. Or insisting that they need an employer's reference letter..

Renting is a nightmare than benefits the agents and landlords, screws over the renters in every way they can. No wonder people dislike landlords and agents.
