John Hume, who worked tirelessly to achieve his goal of peace in Ireland, was buried today. He was made a Knight of St Gregory. He is the only person to have been awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Martin Luther King Award, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize all in recognition of his tireless efforts to being an end to the conflict in Northern Ireland alongside his work to help everyone in his beloved Derry through challenging times. Our world would be a very different place without him, he made our lives better.
The world has lost a great man. Ireland's greatest.

Rest in peace John Hume.

CopperBeeches · 05/08/2020 20:20

Yes, RIP John Hume

TimeTruthandHearts · 05/08/2020 20:25

He really did fight for peace, there was nothing benign or saintly in his endeavours. He was challenging, and tireless and that's how he won the respect of all those involved in the process. He was a remarkable man.

MadeForThis · 05/08/2020 20:28

RIP

Endlessmizzle · 05/08/2020 20:35

Truly a remarkable character and the tributes to him have been so moving, especially all the ones from Derry children about when they met him.

Griselda1 · 05/08/2020 20:41

In the same way as the Ulster Unionist party the SDLP and John Hume sacrificed so much for the Good Friday agreement. Sinn Fein and the DUP were waiting in the wings and took power from both of them. For me the most interesting tribute to John Hume was from David Trimble and I think they both gave so much in a really selfless way.

Leaannb · 05/08/2020 20:45

How tragic. I remember when he bought me shoes as child. Wonderful human being

maras2 · 05/08/2020 20:45

He was a good man.
RIP Halo

AdoptedAWholeLoadOfShit · 05/08/2020 20:49

Listened to Radio Ulster today and the funeral coverage. To say I had a lump in my throat is an understatement. He was a giant amongst men and a very humble man too. Didn’t need the validation by Bono but the Dali Lama and Pope Francis support was beautiful - neither man could aspire to be as influential and aspirational as John was though.

RIP Mr Hume.

AdoptedAWholeLoadOfShit · 05/08/2020 20:55

@Griselda1 I don’t mean him any harm but the one and only time I was in Mr Trimble’s company he tried to find the kitchen and demanded the nibbles were served because he was starving! He got them but I did miss part of the speech delivered by our company executive which apparently was important 😂!

He must have been very hungry. I've huge respect for the role both men had but it was sad to see how poorly both parties polled after the Good Friday agreement was signed.
They were shafted basically to secure a peace settlement.

notanotherpothole · 05/08/2020 22:08

Griselda The role of both parties was to be the peacemakers. Once they had fulfilled that role they were always going to become obsolete. But the parties that took their place have done nothing for their constituents, lives haven't improved as they should have done. Its time for them to become obsolete and let the younger parties takes over and get some real change. Let the next generation have a future without sectarianism of any sort. I hope.

Griselda. I doubt John would have said he was shafted. He had fulfilled his wish. His life's work. He continued his work for the people of Derry beyond that. It is a pity that there haven't been any politicians of his ilk since then. This place could be so much more than it is with half decent leadership, but its a different world from my childhood and it is primarily thanks to one man. Yes he had help, but he was the instigator of all the talks and the driving force in keeping them going.

Wonderful selfless man..... if only there were more like him, may he eat in peace.

Poppet1974 · 05/08/2020 23:10

Rest In Peace obvs

blubberyboo · 06/08/2020 00:14

He was a wonderful man and did a fantastic job to bring people together and showing people the importance of dispersing fear by respecting diversity
It is now our responsibility to maintain the peace that he won

Griselda1 · 06/08/2020 00:36

The main architects of the Good Friday Agreement were the SDLP and the Official Unionist party. They fought tooth and nail to get the agreement through and their electoral success has been waning ever since. Perhaps that's part of the sacrifice for being peacemakers but it's difficult to understand.

RedNun · 06/08/2020 00:41

He deserved all of those prizes.

Inniu · 06/08/2020 00:58

A true hero.

A little irreverent but fitting as we live in John Humes peace

A sad day.

RIP John Hume.

Not at all!

Re your most recent post OP, I was pondering yesterday, can you imagine the current fucking shower trying to negotiate a peace agreement? Foster, O'Neill, Johnson, Trump and an NI Secretary who's only there because the last one was kicked out for conspicuous competence? Doesn't bear thinking about. We'll not see John's like again.

NancyNoNickers · 06/08/2020 08:33

@Inniu 😂😂 hope it works out for him! A great man, we have him to thank for the world we live in here now, RIP John, a life truly not wasted.

LemonyFace · 06/08/2020 08:38

He was a wonderful man, and all the hard work he did to bring about peace in NI should not be underestimated. I read a post on twitter that said something like "... You looked after Derry in her time of need, now it's Derry's turn to look after you..." put a lot more eloquently than that, it brought a tear to my eye.
RIP John Hume.

Bella2020 · 06/08/2020 08:43

As the wife of a veteran who served numerous tours in NI, I'm very grateful to everyone who worked so hard to bring about the peace agreement. Sleep peacefully, Mr Hume.

I'd hate to even imagine it. Though I'd love to be a fly in the room where their talks were happening.
