Should I be worried

Had a period a few days break and then another one. I'm 45 and always been regular. My GP has requested an urgent smear, I am freaking out
I would have thought it was more likely to be a polyp or peri menopausal where periods go a bit haywire- anyone reassure me ?

I don't know, I'm not a medical expert. I would think if there is any concern for a doctor it would be procedure to investigate further without delay. Could be something or nothing but they need to find out.

Are you up to date with your smear tests, when was your last one?

workshy44 · 05/08/2020 17:25

pretty much, missed the last one that was due during lockdown when they were not doing them here

Start of the menopause? My periods became very erratic, similar to when I started aged 12.

Cervical smears are a screening tool, NOT a diagnostic test. Women with symptoms like abnormal bleeding should be referred to Gynaecology,

Could be the start of menopause

Smears are not only screening, and since OP hasn't had hers, then it is entirely appropriate for the GP to get one done.

However, OP, I wouldn't freak out just yet. There are lots of reasons why you may have abnormal bleeding at your age, and I'm sure your GP will follow up with further investigations/referrals.
