Feeling unwell and feverish this morning with sore throat and dry cough. Took a hay fever tablet and some pAracetomal but no real effect.

Obviously worried about potential covid so I’ve arrange a test for later on this aft. I struggled on with a morning meeting but then cancelled my afternoon ones (I’m wfh).

I’ve let my line manager know and he responded, not with a get well or any kind of acknowledgement I’m unwell, simply asking me to get a piece of work back to him as ‘urgent’. Not sure whether it’s because I’m feeling majorly under the weather but it’s really riled me.

I haven’t responded yet and am torn between emphasising fact I’m not well and have been told to go and take a test, or apologising and trying to find a way to get the work done this evening, however shit I’m feeling. WWYD?

as a manager if someone told me they had woken up feeling unwell this morning and had already spoken to a GP and been prescribed antibiotics for a sore throat I'd think they were pulling a fast one

And I, as a manager, would think precisely the reverse. Hearing that she had seen a doctor and been prescribed appropriate medication, Taking that as a sign that it was quite the reverse.

Not pulling a fast one, but actually ill, and hoping it’s not COVID , which could mean a far longer time off and a lengthy recovery.

Call me cynical but I'm always suspicious of people too ill to do their work but can be arsed to post on AIBU

Yes, because 5 minutes on Mumsnet is exactly like an 8 hour working day with exact tasks, deadlines, consequences for errors etc.

Yeah, because posting on MN is so mentally taxing 🙄 I am feverish and potentially infectious, I am not on my death bed.

I managed to complete my work. I didn’t let anyone down. I have an impeccable sickness record.

Looks like some people share the people skills of my line manager.

No covid result yet, they said 24-72 hours. Hoping it’s sooner rather than later so I just know. Although I guess if I start to improve with the antibiotics it probably shows it isn’t covid. Urgh. I’m babbling. Time for bed.

Lots of people suspected of having it in March/April were offered antibiotics very quickly. It’s absolutely believable and I queried it with my GP when offered, I declined but had some already left over from a UTI. GPS seem to be very worried about bacterial infection and pneumonia.

WFM is confusing things. DH had symptoms and felt very tired and poorly but was still working most of the time, even a Saturday on one occasion as it’s much easier for managers to request an employee gets out a laptop than commutes to the office.

Youngatheart00 · 05/08/2020 20:56

@ShastaBeast you’ve hit the nail on the head. It’s the wfh effect. I wouldn’t have travelled to an office today but there seems to be this assumption that you should work even if sick because home and work are now the same place. I slept for 3 hours during the day today which wasn’t compatible with work!!

I got AB’s really easily back in March.10 minute phone consultation and GP said ‘hmm I don’t Know whether to see you or not) I was Clammy had a red tracking infection. He then prescribed a really strong anti-biotic for a week. As it was a priority I picked them up the same day at the pharmacy.

It can be harder to draw the line and boundaries when working from home, bizarrely as well, it seems to be considered worse to make an effort to go into/start work and see how you get on when poorly, rather than taking the day off to start with. Next time i would phone as you would if you were in the office and follow the same procedure so you're not lumbered finishing x, y and z, as you wouldn't be if you weren't physically in the office. Hope you're feeling better soon.
