Research showing that parents do not spend money on drugs etc thus depriving their children of food?

Have been googling and can't find anything. Lots of research into child poverty and food insecurity that strongly implies there are other reasons (benefits sanctions etc etc) but nothing proving that it's rarely the parents' "fault" (obviously these situations can be complex, so I use that word advisedly).

Please show me something which isn't anecdotal or based on self-reporting, from a credible UK source. By self-reporting I mean parents saying they can't afford to buy food sometimes.

Thanks. I think it's an important question, that needs answering with credibility.

Have a look at the Child poverty action groups or Poverty Alliance website

You have a very optimistic view of people OP. AlI can say is my own personal observations and experience does not support your theory, but I agree with BKCRMP that is games, drink, gambling and 50" TVs more than drugs that will be the source of the problem.

I went the the most deprived school in my area so most of my friends lived in poverty.
Only one of them had a parent with addiction issues, he wouldn’t cook for her but he would still give her £5 everyday for food.

Tonp · 06/08/2020 05:48

But obviously a teenager does not know how to budget £5 into a healthy diet with no cooking skills so she was overweight.
I used to give her my sandwiches for lunch.

Sorry if I wasn't clear! Yes, I meant is there evidence somewhere to argue against the misconception (my view) that the reason for food poverty is NOT that parents are spending income on non-essentials - drugs probably being the most quoted example, in the right wing press etc - ?

So you think it's a misconception that poverty is NOT the result of buying drugs?

labyrinthloafer · 06/08/2020 06:16

There is pretty reliable information about the number of people who take drugs and their social position, income, age etc. as this is extensively researched. There are also University researchers who study poverty in depth.

The people who blame those in poverty for making the wrong choices wouldn't change their view with evidence, imo, there is always a way to blame the poor person themselves.

Belledan1 · 06/08/2020 08:17

Thats why lots of children of drug addicts get taken in to care as parents neglect them including food and put money for drugs first.

Belledan1 · 06/08/2020 08:19

But there are plenty of caring parents who struggle through no fault of their own and need food banks etc that are wonderful parents and kids come first.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/08/2020 08:24

Neglect is different to poverty, they don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

NeverTwerkNaked · 06/08/2020 08:26

Op are you getting tangled up with double negatives?

MyFartWillGoOn · 06/08/2020 08:27

@JulyBreeze I'm still not clear. So you think that child poverty IS the result of parents spending money on non essentials like drugs? As you want to argue AGAINST the view that the parents are not to blame?

Dear me please rethink your writing style for your dissertation. I've read you OP and follow up posts several times and still can't make head nor tail due to the double negatives etc.

Thank you, I thought it was me.

Yes you're right, I did do the double negative thing in that sentence (misconception.... NOT), sorry!

Thankfully, I'm not writing a dissertation, am just interested.

And I do know the difference between child neglect and child poverty.
