Scales show different weights. Which is correct.

I weigh myself each morning (on a diet).

The first reading is always 3lbs heavier than the second reading.

Which is correct ?? Should I take an average ??

Mine does this too, but a 3rd, 4th, 5th etc reading is always the same as the 2nd so I take the 2nd one as correct.

I figure as long as I always take the same one it doesn’t matter too much. It’s not so crucial for me to know my exact weight as it is to know I’m eg 7lbs down or stayed the same or whatever.

barbrahunter · 05/08/2020 07:55

The lighter one, always!

LucyAutumn · 05/08/2020 07:59

Do you have any weights or full packets of flour/ sugar or the like in your cupboards? Weigh those so you can see which scale is a more accurate reading?

Glendaruel · 05/08/2020 08:01

Is the floor flat, are you moving scales as this will impact

BobbinThreadbare123 · 05/08/2020 08:04

Calibrate them. Put something with a known mass on them both. Whichever one is closest will be your more accurate one. You could do multiple readings and take an average to improve your statistics! 3 lb isn't much though.

nonameme · 05/08/2020 08:07

Yeah subsequent readings 3rd, 4th etc are always the same as the 2nd.

I thought it could be the floor but it happens even when I move it to a different floor.

I know it's not a huge deal to know exactly. It's just that I'm short and have a 'maximum' and a 'minimum' (my boobs disappear if lose too much) I'm happy at, and 3lbs difference is quite a lot on my frame. I'm at the very upper end of healthy range.

Mummiepig · 05/08/2020 08:09

My scales do the same, 1st reading is usually 2.5lb heavier but the 2nd 3rd 4th etc all the same
I store my scales on their side so maybe that has something to do with it, DH remarked on it too
I’ve been weighed at the doctors and found the 2nd weight more accurate

nonameme · 05/08/2020 08:09

It's not two scales. It's the same scale but when I step on a second time, the reading is 3lbs less.

OP posts:
SilverYellow · 05/08/2020 08:09

It'll be the second if the third and fourth weights are the same.
I sometimes find my scale does that too on the first one.. but it usually shows a 'C' so I know it isn't accurate and have to weigh myself again.

nonameme · 05/08/2020 08:10

I'll try the calibration thing.

Yeah they are stored on their side. Although it doesn't happen when others weigh themselves on it.

OP posts:
Thneedville · 05/08/2020 08:11

Mine does exactly that. It’s stored on its side and it’s not right the first go. The 2nd is same as any subsequent measurements so the lighter one is right.

I don’t know if DH knows this, he probably thinks he is 3lbs heavier than he is

OxanaVorontsova · 05/08/2020 08:12

Let them set to zero and go off again when you put them down then weigh yourself

Stanleyville · 05/08/2020 08:14

Mine do this too! Am glad to find it's 'normal' and that we can trust the subsequent weights 😁

nonameme · 05/08/2020 08:15

Ooh this is promising Grin Grin

I know it sounds a bit weird to have an exact weight range in my head, but since I've gotten older I gain really quickly and if I'm busy don't always notice. I've also lost quickly during periods of stress and had sagging as a result. That's why I have a 'range'.

EmbarrassedUser · 05/08/2020 08:15

I’m so glad that it’s not just me. I nearly always weigh myself 3 times in a row and the second and third ones are the same. So strange.

user1497207191 · 05/08/2020 08:18

The first time you stand on them, you'll be flexing their springs/sensor pads etc after a period of them resting. That is why the first time is different.
