Struggling with losing weight - keto

Toni42 · 04/08/2020 15:21

After so much hype from family and friends tried keto but I’m struggling. Just broke it with THREE packets of crisps and now having a glass of wine cos so depressed. I’m really down. Any tips on sticking to keto and stop my carb addiction. Cooking food for kids is torture as always carb based and find myself nibbling their food whilst cooking

I've lost a stone and a half this year on my gym's eating plan. I eat lots of lean protein, lots of veg, some unrefined carbs and low fat. And I workout at least three times a week, but not for hours at a time, 45 min weights workouts.

I've done lots of diets over the years, but I've never eaten as much food and not felt hungry or deprived of anything. I count calories, set by my trainer.

Sorry but Keto is restrictive, I’ve been doing it for several months and really love it but it is. Many healthy foods like lentils, hummus, carrots, nearly all fruit will tip you over 20g carbs a day

wowfudge · 05/08/2020 21:51

I've read up on keto and other diets and over time there is little to choose between any of them in terms of how much weight you actually lose. But a diet isn't the answer, it's changing your long-term eating habits and being more active is the key.

Siameasy · 05/08/2020 22:09

Oh yeah keto is restrictive for sure but if you follow Low Carb bootcamp you can start off on keto and long term you are low carb.
I also find if you lift heavy weights you can eat a lot more

@wowfudge agree with everything you said. When I said before about supplementing vitamins and minerals at the start of keto when you are supposed to only have 20g carb you can't eat all the leafy veg etc as a Pp said you would go over that instantly. But it is a way of life for sure low carb for life which works for some not for others!

wowfudge · 07/08/2020 08:25

The more I find out about the keto, the less appealing it is. Leafy green veg are some of the best sources of nutrients. Not eating them because of the carb content is madness. I'm pretty sure that nutrients from food are better absorbed than from supplements.

OP, I am a carb addict. Like a PP, I would describe having my mouth full of toast as making me feel so happy. I would eat 6-7 bags of crisps on the bounce. But I was also constantly bloated, grey skinned, exhausted all the time.

I've been low carb (not keto) since the start of June. It's completely reset my thinking. I don't binge. I'm so much happier without the excess carbs. I've lost weight, my skin is clearer, my mind fog has gone, I exercise daily, and happily. It is really hard at first, the cravings are INSANE but once you are through it - well I can see why people are so evangelical about it. Once you've read around the hormonal/insulin response your body has to these foods and understand the effects it's having on your body in real-time, you find yourself wanting to support this rather than hinder it.

I will always be a carb addict. I will have slip ups. But how I feel right now is worth so much more than having cereal for breakfast, a bagel for lunch and chips with my tea. It fits easily with my meal plan for my family and we are all eating far more vegetables as a result.

You don't have to go full keto for a decent impact.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 07/08/2020 08:57

You can eat green veg on keto! It’s a major part of the diet. Starchy root veg is a no, so no sweet potatoes, beetroot etc. but broccoli, kale, spinach, salad etc all fine

SkiingIsHeaven · 07/08/2020 09:07

Watch the tv show lose a stone in 21 days. Very interesting and great menu ideas. Also food options with lots of variety.

Really it boils down to eat less and exercise more so you burn more calories then you eat.

I am doing the 5:2 which really works for me.

Good luck. It is hard work but you really need will power to succeed.

Toni42 · 07/08/2020 14:06

I’ve decided just to eat healthy rather than keto. I just hate the greasy feeling in the morning when I’m having eggs with butter, cheese and spinach. The smell just makes me so sick! I know it’s worked wonders for others but I think it’s just not for me. I’m really annoyed as spent loads on meat and other things that I can eat now.

OP. Just try reducing your carbs. As I've said below the impact can be enormous.

May I ask approx how many carbs you are eating in your low carb plan? Thank you.
WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 08/08/2020 08:31

@Guylan - I try to keep under 35g carbs a day. 10g comes from my milk, the rest comes from cheese and vegetables.
