Colouring books - who knew?

pandafunfactory · 03/08/2020 22:14

On a much needed blissful holiday in a remote uk location. Dd bought along an adult colouring book. I idly picked up a pen and oh my word it's bliss! Bought my own today and enjoying it so much. After months dealing with Covid (I'm nhs) it's absorbing and satisfying.

Aibu to think this is unexpectedly marvellous?

YANBU. They're marvellous. I'm totally hooked as well

jillandhersprite · 03/08/2020 22:20

Also if you have a random interest you can probably download pages to print out.
I have some Pokémon colouring sheets (for the kids!) that I may have done one with them. I think we called that an art subject and ticked off homeschool for the day!

Dahlietta · 03/08/2020 22:21

What do you use to colour? I find this a stumbling block!

steppemum · 03/08/2020 22:21

I think there is such a soothing effect of doing something gently mindless with your hands.
Colouring books do it
knitting
sewing
and so on.
I think it allows our minds to settle and think while our hands are busy

Newbiehere123 · 03/08/2020 22:23

I would love to do that! I always walk to the book isle in a supermarket to see baby books but always notices these amazing colouring books and think to myself that I will never have time to do it, so I just walk past it feeling sorry for myself. How old is your daughter?

get good quality colouring pencils. Not cheap. Art quality. They are a revelation, so different to kids pencils.

Look after them, don't drop them, and get a good sharp pencil sharpener.

Actually WH Smiths own brand are quite good and affordable.
Don't get watercolour pencils by mistake

When I was sectioned after a mental breakdown the first activity I could do was colouring. I could only use one colour as to have to decide between colours was too much. It really helped me and as I got better I could gradually increase the colours I could use. I bought some colouring books from papeterie bleu which were lovely books. I had lots of the pictures on the walls of my room.

AranciaRosso · 03/08/2020 22:31

I use these

Really lovely colours and easy to use. Highly recommend them.

Dahlietta · 03/08/2020 22:31

Thanks, @steppemum

Dahlietta · 03/08/2020 22:33

And @AranciaRosso!

pandafunfactory · 03/08/2020 22:53

@UndertheCedartree I'm glad it helped you, it really does do something different with your brain.

Dd is 13, she's enjoying hers too but I am obsessed! Planning some in pencil and some in pen.

I can highly recommend sweary adult colouring in books. There’s something so calming about colouring in the F word.

SkepticalCat · 03/08/2020 23:05

I second WHSmith colouring pencils. Someone bought these for my then five year old a few years ago, but they are so nice to use that I have commandeered them for myself Blush Currently half price at £9.99:

Arteza pencils are also nice.

MsJaneAusten · 03/08/2020 23:08

I have a sweary colouring book. It’s marvellous.

Yaottie · 03/08/2020 23:18

Just got some of the black widow pencils, what gorgeous colours! Can't wait to use them

UndertheCedartree · 04/08/2020 00:08

@pandafunfactory - thank you! Have fun! I use pens on some, pencils on others!

UndertheCedartree · 04/08/2020 00:11

@steppemum - thank you so much! I am on the road to recovery. I was discharged last month from in-patient!

bridgetreilly · 04/08/2020 00:46

Um, a lot of people knew? I've been doing them for at least 12 years, but they became really popular 7 or 8 years ago. You couldn't move for colouring books, colouring postcards, colouring magazines, colouring everything.

Covid must have been a difficult time to be ill too.
I like to think you are sitting in a nice peaceful garden in the sun doing your colouring and getting better.

Hope that isn't too far from the truth

TylluanBach · 06/08/2020 00:51

I've started on a Welsh themed colouring book during lock down. It's amazing how involved you can get in colouring. I get completely zoned out and forget about a lot of worry for a while.

StCharlotte · 06/08/2020 08:13

My brother gave me a colouring book and pencils before I left home. I was delighted. I remember debating whether to take it with me when I was packing.

I left home in 1984.

Never been so ahead of the times in my life Grin
