Neighbour dog/land thread with diagram

Have had various issues with neighbours (four terraced houses - we are B). Nothing big other than noise issues which have been resolved. All four houses have front gardens with low fences and we get along. A has six cats which poo everywhere but I have just resigned myself to it and pick them up. A also has a baby and energetic 1 year old Jack Russell that she "walks" about 10-15 minutes a day. Basically pushes the pram long enough for the baby to fall asleep then she comes home and parks it in the garden.

The dog is clearly not exercised enough and his recall is terrible as she frequently has to run down the road after him. The public road by D goes onto a main road so isn't super safe for a dog to run down. A and C treat the public road as their own and will frequently come out to inspect any car that happens to make a wrong turn and tell them off.

Her front garden is gated, but lately, she has taken to letting him out her back door to play or wee. Not a big deal except there is no fence and she isn't supervising him. I asked her to keep an eye on him as he has weed on my daughter's bike, dug a hole by our shed and tried to come in our house multiple times. I have said nicely "NO ROVER, go away!" when he does this, but it doesn't seem to sink in to her that I don't like strange dogs pissing on my property.

He also has done a poo on C's land with grass and dug holes. C is too scared of anything except wayward cars to say anything. Meanwhile A is oblivious despite us asking her to watch him and just stays inside and rings a loud bell when she wants him to come in.

Can we complain to the council? Will they do anything?

Creative ideas other than secretly training her dog when she isn't looking?

Are they council houses?

Confrontayshunme · 03/08/2020 14:49

No all private owned though A's parents own hers.

Put up a fence?

FAQs · 03/08/2020 14:50

It’s difficult to visualise, can fences be put up or is it communal gardens?

IndecentFeminist · 03/08/2020 14:50

If you're allowed, could you put up a fence?

FAQs · 03/08/2020 14:52

So does the dog jump the fences?

Confrontayshunme · 03/08/2020 14:52

The part which shows B's parking space is literally big enough for our bins, small occasionally rented car and bike shed. A proper gate/fence would take up all our space!

So why would you need to contact the council?

I would offer to walk the dog. We all value help with a baby

Confrontayshunme · 03/08/2020 14:55

The spaces at the back of the houses are all unfenced, we just have a small low fence separating our parking space from A's land behind her house. It is basically a divider and all our back spaces open on the road, which is public as it gets cleaned by the council and they pick up our bins there by bollards. D is the only one with an enclose rear bit as there's is on the corner.

Why should I offer to walk her dog so it doesn't wee and poo on our property?! I already pick up after the cats. If she can't care for and supervise a working active dog, why is it my problem? She could easily let him out to wee and play in the fenced front garden but she doesn't.

You asked for creative solutions Some people are nice neighbours In lockdown we communally walked the 20 odd dogs on our road as some owners couldn’t. It was great and we have gone from a road of strangers to a community.

You don’t have to walk the dog. It was a creative solution

So you say it's your property.... Put a fence around it.

She should control her dog at all times though - it's the law

Also - have you actually seen the cats/dog doing all this you should be aware that many wild animals also do similar things.

Ishihtzuknot · 03/08/2020 15:12

Why aren’t there fences separating your back gardens or is it one shared garden? I’m sure she’s busy with having a baby, but that’s no excuse for poor pet ownership.
Speak to your landlord and request fences along the boundary so the dog can’t get in. Record evidence of the dog on your property. Ask her to supervise her dog when it’s outside or she will be liable for damage costs to your personal property. Put the poo back on her property where it belongs. Try and keep it civil as disputes can get out of hand, but don’t put up with this she’s a CF.

AlphaDalpha · 03/08/2020 15:20

When the dog comes on your property, collect it and return it to A's front door with a ring of the doorbell. She'll soon get fed up of answering the door.

This is honestly one of the stupidest solutions to a mn problem I have ever read. It’s also not a solution as A will most probably carry on letting her dog out unsupervised so it can shit on op’s property, even if she does offer to take it for a walk. Dogs shit several times a day. Are you honestly suggesting op takes A’s dog for a walk every time it needs to shit?

Op, the only thing you can really do here is have a proper talk with A and explain you are not happy with her dog shitting in your garden and digging holes in it. Do it every single time you see the dog in your garden. If it does shit, pick it up and leave it in her garden. Having a baby is no excuse. I have 3 dc, (7,5,5). When my twins were born my dd was only 2 years old. I also had 2 dogs and 2 cats. Guess what I didn’t do? I didn’t let them shit in other people’s gardens. I would also look into fencing your garden so the dog can’t get in.

Felifox · 03/08/2020 15:29

Don't put the poo back on her garden, it's illegal to do this, had an issue with open front gardens! My understanding from our local councillor is that you should email the council's refuse team, we have a separate email for this. Contact the EHO at your LA for advice

Sonders · 03/08/2020 15:39

I would have thought the first option is the dog warden to report a loose animal. It might be worth jotting down how frequently it's out too.
