Covid more than once??

Not an 'aibu' but posting for traffic.

Just wondering if anyone has had coronavirus twice??

Had covid back in March. Wasn't tested as it was before tests were available but know that I definitely had the virus.

I wear my face mask when in shops and on public transport and use hand sanitizers or wash hands when possible, but is it less likely (though not impossible) to catch it again if you have already had it??

I think you can get it more than once because there is more than 1 strain (like a common cold). This is my assumption and isn’t based on anything scientific that I have read anywhere

That's what I have read.

There are several strains of Covid and the virus mutates.
You can get colds frequently, but they are not necessarily the same cold - I think this is the same as Covid.

Which is why scientists are looking at yearly vaccines which I guess you would combine with the flu vaccine.

The same study also says what other studies have shown - those who are vulnerable shed for longer.

This one is very long, talks about the shedding and the risk groups.

Should add the Hopkin one is slightly out of date and still tells the fake no under 18's.

Lots of people are saying they definitely know they had it, even though they weren’t tested. I was one of those - all the classic symptoms, I was convinced I had it earlier this year. However have had an antibody test and its negative. You may now have had it (although equally you may have!)

My sister works in the nhs. She said she has had colleagues who got it, tested positive, then had antibody tests which showed they had antibodies, and then further antibody tests about 3-4 weeks later showed the antibodies were no longer there. Some went on to contract the virus a second time. She herself had what she thought was covid 19 in February, but wasnt tested as they weren't testing then. She got sick again in May and it was textbook covid 19. She was and still is wrecked by it. However when she was tested it was negative. She didnt put much faith in the test. It's apparently only 60% accurate.

canigooutyet · 02/08/2020 18:11

Cannot remember where I read it,could have been on one of the links I posted about antibody testing.

Various research has shown that the antibody test works within a certain time period for some people and this is where I think confusion lies around how long it lasts, some studies suggest 3 months, others 7 months.

The cv test works best if you test within 5 days of showing symptoms yet other research says before you start showing symptoms you're already infecting people. And it's during incubation period you might get a more accurate test. But other research has found those vulnerable tested negative, had the symptoms but two weeks later condition worsened ended up in hospital and tested positive.

Think this is why they are looking more at immunity cells.

If this 20 minute home test for antibodies is widely available from this month, this will help a lot with the ongoing reseach.

@Jussayingisall l did everything right - social distancing, hand washing and i caught it.

Jussayingisall · 02/08/2020 20:34

Well then you didn't clearly.

rc22 · 02/08/2020 23:05

Well @Jussayingisall maybe it was the person who gave it to me that didn't get it right.

Crinkle77 · 02/08/2020 23:56

@WhittlingIhopMonkey

First of all get an antibody test. If you weren't tested in March you dont "know" that you had it. Loads of people got really sick with lots of things in March that weren't covid.
Yes, I think people seem to forget that there are still other viruses knocking around which have very similar symptoms to covid 19
dreamingmama · 03/08/2020 02:17

I tested positive in March. Was sick for 2 weeks

Tested positive 3 weeks ago also!

Justpassingthroughagain · 03/08/2020 03:33

dreaming I do hope you spent all the intervening time isolating! You were probably positive all the way through....
